Valentine Wreath with Felt Hearts {Tutorial}

Can you tell that Valentine’s has taken over my blog? I have another Valentine decoration for you today. A cute Valentine wreath with felt hearts. Of course, I have a tutorial for you as well because I don’t want to leave you ‘hanging’ (pun intended…hehe) wondering how the heck to make it and all. 🙂
Valentine Wreath with Felt Hearts

I got my inspiration for this wreath on a recent trip to IKEA. They had the most adorable wreath in grey that I totally wanted, but they only had the one on display. Boo! I thought about the wreath and looked up to see if I could order it online. That is when I saw the red wreath and got the idea to make a Valentine wreath. Thanks, IKEA!

Valentine Wreath with Felt Hearts
Supplies:
  • Wreath form
  • Yarn
  • Felt
  • Ribbon
  • Embroidery Thread
  • Needle
  • Fabric Glue

First wrap your wreath form in yarn. I didn’t show you how to do this part because I thought it was pretty self explanatory. Just in case, to wrap your wreath, wrap the yarn around the wreath, tie a knot and start wrapping. I like mine wrapped tightly so I twist the yarn some on the form as I go to tighten the yarn. This is a lengthy process, so a movie or good TV show is a great idea.

Valentine Wreath with Felt Hearts
For the felt hearts, I started by tracing and cutting out my hearts. If you are good at free handing such things, then go for it. I am not, so I used my Cricut to cut out a few hearts that I used as templates.
Valentine Wreath with Felt Hearts
Cut lengths of the ribbon you plan to use. I cut mine at probably 18″, which was way too long for the size wreath I had. Glue the ribbon to the top of the felt heart. I used Crafter’s Pick – The Ultimate. It is supposed to be natural or at least less toxic than other glues like this. This is the second time I have worked with it and both times it has worked well.
Valentine Wreath with Felt Hearts
I wanted the knots in my thread hidden inside the hearts. In case you haven’t done this before. Start with a knot. Sew starting on what will be the inside of the bottom piece of felt. Pull your thread through to the bottom. Pictured in #1 above. Add the second piece of felt on top. Start sewing normally around the heart. You will notice that I started sewing part way up the side of the heart and proceeded around the heart to the bottom as show in #2 and #3 above. I then filled the hearts and finished sewing.

I decided to hand sew my hearts because I wanted the cute stitched look of the embroidery thread, but her idea of stuffing the hearts on the side was perfect for my project. I had been thinking of how to sew the ribbon and fill at the top. Britni’s idea made this so much easier by filling the hearts on the side. I made adding the ribbon easy by gluing the ribbon rather than trying to hold it and sew it at the same time.
Valentine Wreath with Felt Hearts
Hiding the final knot is a touch trickier, but still do-able. When you have reached the end and your thread is coming out the bottom of the heart, place your needle as though you are going to come back up through the felt. Only sew through the bottom piece of felt. Try to do this near one of the stitches. After you have pulled your thread up through only one piece of the felt near a stitch, use your needle (show in #1 above) to go ‘behind’ the stitch. This is creating a knot. In #2 above, you can see how to pull that knot or thread around the stitch out. Thread your needle through the hole to create a knot at the stitch. You can add one more knot on top of this by making a knot the normal way right on top of this knot you created. That is what I did in #3 above. Clip your thread. If the knot is sticking out a little too far, just use your needle to push it back in a little farther.

Valentine Wreath with Felt Hearts
I went really low tech for adding the hearts to the wreath. I figured out what length I wanted each heart and simply tied them onto the wreath.
Valentine Wreath with Felt Hearts
It is soo cute! It is also right by my kitchen table, so I see it everyday. Love that! You just may catch a glimpse of the wreath in the pictures of our Valentine’s table on next week…hmmm, I wonder. Yep, you sure will.
Valentine Wreath with Felt Hearts
Aren’t the hearts so stinking cute? Clearly, I think they are. To hang the wreath, I added a ribbon tied in a bow. The nail hides right in the knot of the ribbon.
Valentine Wreath with Felt Hearts
Do you decorate for Valentine’s? I have always wanted to have more decorations than I do, so it has been fun this year creating things and sharing them with you all. That is one of the things I love about blogging. I am doing and making all of these things I have always wanted to do. 😀

More to Enjoy! 😍

Thank you! I had fun making the embroidered hearts, which really surprised me because I don’t usually like any type of hand work sewing.
