I’m excited to share with you my update on my half marathon training as well as my results from my 10K race this weekend. So, let’s get right to it.
I didn’t have the best training week ever. I got in my first short run for the week.
I also wanted to explain that most Tuesday’s now, I’m opting for the ‘rest option in my plan. I am doing that because we have our homeschool co-op on Tuesday mornings. It just makes it easier to get out of the house on time. Also, I teach the P.E. class at our co-op, so when it says rest, it really means I taught P.E. and totally couldn’t breathe while trying to talk and tell them what to do next as I do the exercises with them. I still get a workout in on those days, just not one that I have on my plan.
I was really looking forward to my 8 to 10 mile run this week because the physical therapist had taped my knee to see if that would help my IT band while running. Unfortunately, he taped it for me on Monday afternoon. Mr. T got called out of town for work on Monday night and didn’t get back until late Thursday night. Therefore the tape was a total waste and I didn’t get to see if it made any difference in my running. I was so disappointed and frustrated. I’m running out of time to figure this out so I can finish the half marathon and there went another week with no progress.
I did have a good week in that I enjoyed doing my strength training and physical therapy exercises at home. I felt good and strong to get some of those workouts in.
Now on to the super fun part of the week. This weekend I ran in a 10K.
Here is what I ate before the race: banana and half of the Stinger Waffle(affiliate link)
. I carried my FuelBelt handheld water bottle(affiliate link)
with me filled with the Cytomax
. I also used my new watch (Garmin Forerunner 10
) and used the feature on the watch to keep track of my pace. It has a feature where it will tell you when you are ahead or behind the pace that you set. I found it helpful to achieve my goal for this race.

Both the Cytomax and the Stinger waffle were OK. I think I like my Cliff Bar
(affiliate link) better and I know that I like the Accelerade (affliate link)
or Hammer Heed
(affliate link)better. I am getting things narrowed down to what works for me so at least I will know that part of the equation for my half marathon.

My goal for the 10K was to try to hit an 8:30 pace average for the race and to hit 3 times of speed training (or running at a much faster pace) during the race. I planned to do those 3 times of running a faster pace at mile 2, mile 4 and to the finish line.
At the finish…I am so excited! I hit my goals and it felt great! I finished in 52:56 according to the official time. That is right at my goal of the 8:30 average per mile. I also hit my goal of the 3 times of running faster. It was fun to ‘sprint’ to the finish line! I use the term sprint loosely though as I am no sprinter and I started a bit earlier than I should have and lost a bit of steam before the finish line. No matter, it felt great and I am so happy with my performance and that I was able to nail exactly what I wanted to for the race.
On top of my excitement with my performance and nailing my goals, I stuck around for the door prize drawings and the awards. This was a smaller race than the others I have done. I knew a bunch of the organizers as well. It turns out I was the first female finisher in the 40-44 age group! Woohoo! Just the cherry on the sundae of this race. I was also only the 5th woman to finish the race!
My official results:
- 52:56 for the 10k
- 8:31 average pace per mile
- Overall 26th (out of 82)
- 1st in my age division (40-44)
- 5th woman to finish
Enjoy your week and Happy running to you!
Im a runner too..It’s very exciting when you hit your goals and PR! Congrats!! I just ran a 5k and took second over all the women..Im 47! So pumped!!
Thanks so much! Way to got at your 5K result, that is fantastic! I bet you were super excited. Hitting my PR and my goals was equally exciting to the 1st place. Felt so great!
So excited for you. Such an inspiration. I will be returning to your training posts for inspiration. 🙂
Thank you! I don’t feel much like an inspiration, but if I can provide inspiration for you, I’m happy to do it! Do you have something you are working toward?
Wow – great job! I’m training for my first half but have to admit I’m not quite as ambitious as you… I’m run/walking using the Galloway method so my pace isn’t so quick, but it works for me. When is your race?
Thank you! I think your method sound great and like it might end up being more fun. Sometimes I wish I could be less focused and goal driven and just enjoy the fun and the moment. My race is in Novebmer, when is yours?
You are an inspiration and a good example to your kids! Way to meet those goals!!
Aww, thank you! I love that I’m being a good example to my kids…hadn’t really thought about that yet. But I really want them to grown up to be happy and fit as well. So your comment hits me in the heart. Thanks!
Well done, that’s awesome
Thank you! ;-D
