Yarn Wreaths

I made these wreaths for both my parents and Mr. T’s parents as well as all our siblings as Christmas/Hanukkah presents this year. I made 6 in all (one isn’t pictured since I finished it a little last minute). I got the idea from this blog: Take Heart – DIY: Yarn Wreath with Felt Flowers. She has a whole tutorial on how to make them.

I thought I would share mine here just for fun. They were easy to make (just took quite a bit of time to wrap the yarn around the wreath form) and since we were trying to stick to a very tight budget this year it allowed me to give a gift to all our family and mostly stay in our small budget. It is a very reasonably price project especially if you shop when your craft store has things on sale or buy things each time you get a 40% or 50% off coupon.

I was amazed at how easy the felt flowers were and how they actually turned out like the pictures on her blog! Love it when you can make something and it actually turns out like pictured or at least like you want it to!

To make these wreaths, I used a 14″ styrofoam wreath form. I could have used any size (I thought this size would be easier to mail) and I could have used a straw wreath form like the one pictured to the right. You can click on it to look at it on Amazon. I started and finished my wreath with knots. I figured out how to start the wreath and wrap the yarn right over the tail and at the end how to tuck the tail under a few strands of yarn and clip it off.

I used mostly Vanna White Yarn, like they used on the blog. I did use another brand for 1 or 2 of them to find the right color. I really don’t know that the brand or type of yarn really matters that much mostly the color. The Vanna White Yarn was on sale and had a good selection of colors. So, that made it easier to use for me.

Lastly I used felt sheets to make the flowers and a 2″ Ribbon for the ‘hanger.’ I used a hot glue gunto keep the ribbon in place as well as to adhere the flowers to the wreath. My last tip is that I used a small (cake sized) paper plate to as a template for some of the smaller flowers and a dinner sized paper plate for the larger flowers. I also just made some slightly larger or smaller than those templates to vary the sizes.
