Wire and Dowel Rod Ribbon Holder (DIY & Tutorial)

Earlier this week, I showed you my craft area re-organization. In those pictures, you saw my ribbon holder.

Today I want to show you how I made the ribbon holder. I know it is not the fanciest or prettiest ribbon holder you will ever see, however, I was able to make it with what I had on hand and I like the way it looks. I also really like that it freed up some space in my drawer organizer and allowed me to consolidate my ribbon stash. Which, quite frankly, I didn’t realize I had quite as much as I do. I had a little here and a little there. The ribbon holder is now more full than in these pictures.

A simple wire and dowel rod ribbon holder.

To make this ribbon holder you will need:

  • a dowel rod
  • wire
  • wire clippers
  • wall hooks
  • ribbon
I raided Mr. T’s picture hanging kit. The wire is just simple wire from a picture hanging kit. I measured how long I wanted my ribbons to hang down from the hooks. (I also found the hooks in Mr. T’s toolbox.) I left extra wire at each end. To form the holder, simply bend up the end of the wire into a loop. Twist it around to secure it. I had the dowel on hand from one of our many school projects. You will need to cut your dowel rod to length. I cut mine using scissors because it is not a thick dowel rod.
After cutting the dowel down to size, the hooks were put into the wall, making sure to keep them level. I was then able to put the dowel rod through the loops I made in the wire. Great it worked! Now I wanted to add something to make it look a little prettier.
I used some of that plethora of pink ribbon you can see above.
  1. Center your ribbon through the top loop. You will have 2 loose strands of ribbon.
  2. Twist the 2 loose strands of ribbon together down the wire.
  3. At the bottom, slip one strand of ribbon through your loop.
  4. Tie a knot, using the loop to secure your knot.
  5. I wanted to add some additional color, so I knotted in a second color ribbon.
  6. Tie your ribbon into a bow (or there is probably some fancier thing you could do that I couldn’t think of!).
Viola – prettier ribbon holder!
You could also paint your dowel rod, which would add another element of pretty. I just wanted it done!
A low cost (free for me)wire and dowel rod ribbon holder!

I made these cute Gymnastic Hoops for our dolls using some of my newly organized ribbon!

Enjoy!

Yes, wish there was a way to make the power cords pretty! That would be lovely! I have seen many ideas on organizing power cords though, so if that is what you need, google for it.
You have a great week as well!

Cute idea! I have soooo many ribbon rolls and I don’t have much use for them anyway, but this is a great idea that both utilizes ribbon & organizes them! Love it.
