Training Tuesday – Half Marathon Week 8

This week, I certainly didn’t hit the mark in terms of training. I was tired and stressed and trying to fit 4 weeks of projects into one week. It didn’t work and I had to change expectations.

I thought I would start this Training Tuesday with a tip for you.

This may sound gross to talk about, but let’s just be real. Running is a sweaty sport. Just wait until you hear your five year old daughter discussing how sweaty you are when you come home from running with one of her friends….lovely conversation to realize just how yucky I must be when I get home. Hopefully the little girl didn’t repeat the conversation to her mom. How embarrassing!

Anyway, I wanted to tell you something that has really been helping me this year. I was really struggling with running in the heat and humidity here earlier this summer. I tried wearing a visor, thinking that it might help me a little bit. I’m not sure it helped in terms of helping me feel any cooler. What I love about wearing a visor is the fact that it helps keep a bunch of the sweat off my face and out of my eyes. See, I told you  this would be  a lovely conversation. If you haven’t ever run with a visor or a hat, I highly recommend you give it a try. It works really well in helping keeping your face a bit less sweaty and such while you are out there running. Good thing if you ask me. If you ask my daughter, I’m just dripping in sweat any which way and it doesn’t really matter. 😉

This week, I tried to get a run in on a day Mr. T was at work. It had been raining earlier that morning and I couldn’t run before he left. I thought it would work to go for a run while both my girls were riding their bikes.

Below you can see how it went for me(and you can see my visor):

Do you see anyone running in this picture? Umm, yeah, it didn’t go that well in terms of my actually getting in a ‘real’ run. It also didn’t go well in terms of being a relaxing, stress relieving run. This picture doesn’t look like much of a hill, but it is a decent sized hill and I guess we can say I got my weight training for the day in carrying the bike up the hill. The ride/run did go well in that my girls both had fun and they both rode 3.5 miles on their bikes. They like riding where Mommy runs and, of course, they like beating me on their bikes (though I let one of them beat me a lot to get her to keep going and stop using her brakes!).I don’t think I will try this again hoping for a ‘real’ run for me, but I know my girls want to go again.
This week, I completed my two shorter runs and my modified speed training. I did not get in my long run, in part because of my trying to get 15 other things done and in part because the day that was available was a downpour of rain for most of the day. I took quite a few rest days this week.
The run that I did with the modified speed training, my app said my splits were: 8:14, 8:21 and 6:49! Can you tell in which mile I did the speed training? I love seeing that time. Never knew even with speed training I could run that fast!
I’m not really stressed that I missed this training and didn’t do much this week. I have run the 10.5 in the past and I know I can do it. I needed to do other things this week and I also know that I have started training really early. I have plenty of time to build up the last 3 miles I need to add to make the half marathon.
I hope you have a fantastic week. Thanks so much for stopping by to see how my training is going.
Happy running to you!

P.S.  If you are just joining in on my training, you can view my half marathon training plan here or view other weekly updates here.

More to Enjoy! 😍

You’re doing a fantastic job training and training your kids! I have to figure out something soon about combating the sweat because it wreaks havoc on my hair and if I wash my hair more often than once a week, I’m in for trouble. I read online about this Dri-Sweat band they sell at Sally’s and I hope I can find it in my area so I can see how it works. Might need to do that and a visor! 🙂

The pic of you carrying the bike cracked me up:) I can definitely relate to that. Keep up the great (hard) work!

oh my goodness, you are so amazing to try to do it with your girls! I remember running with my mom and she would make us stay a car length ahead so that she wouldn’t have to stop.

I always found the week for the 10 was the hardest training. Good luck!

Well, if you were with me you wouldn’t have found it amazing at all. First we were crazy slow, second I was less than patient and kind. I need to learn to relax and have no expectations. The having them stay a car length ahead would be great…if only I could get my 5 year old to not use her brakes! 😉
Yes, I did 10 a few weeks ago and I have kind of been dreading going back out. Maybe that is why…it is a block or something with that mileage.
Thanks for saying that…it helps me see maybe I just need to push through.

    I’m working on a 10K right now, and if I can handle that I’ll move on to a half… thanks for the tips! {found you through Craftionary}
