Seeing Dots – Wall Art Perfect for a Teens Room

I’m back with another idea for wall art today. This one is some cute polka dot wall art for my teenager’s room. She loves polka dots and wanted them somewhere in her room. I was happy to oblige since polka dots are just so cute!

This polka dot Wall Art is so stinkin' cute! It is an easy diy that will go great with other bedroom ideas I have for my daughter's room.

If you are a regular follower of my blog, you may have noticed we have been adding a lot of wall art to the two rooms we are working on right now, the living room and my daughter’s room. I’m hoping you aren’t sick of seeing wall art ideas, but if you have reached your limit, just know this is the last one for quite some time to come, unless you count a wreath I have coming up later this week as wall art….then you may want to wait to tune in again until Friday. The wreath is going to be so cute…so I’d suggest stinking around. 🙂

I’m super happy to finally see things on our walls. About a year ago, I got sick of most everything that was on our walls and took it all down. We have had bare walls for quite some time. It is nice to be making things and pulling rooms together and putting some of the final touches on two rooms in our house. Soon, it will be time to decide what room to move to next.

Anyway, to today’s post – making cute polka dot wall art. You will notice it is very similar to the wall art I did in the living room last year as well as the family wall art I showed you last week. It is easy to make and inexpensive, especially if you compare it to the cost of buying wall art or something similar to this. In this case, I was able to select a fabric that is very close to the sheets my daughter picked out to go with her new duvet cover, which makes it even better than something I could buy because it goes perfectly.

Let me show you how to make your own polka dot wall art.

This polka dot Wall Art is so stinkin' cute! It is an easy diy that will go great with other bedroom ideas I have for my daughter's room.

Start by purchasing a large unfinished wooden letter (affiliate link). I selected the first letter of my daughter’s name and got my letter at AC Moore. It was $14. I’ve seen these letters at Hobby Lobby as well, but not at Michael’s (at least not the large letters).

Paint the side of your letter a color that complements the fabric and room for which you are making this wall art.

Do a rough cut of the fabric to slightly larger than the letter you are covering. Stiffen the fabric by giving it one coat of Mod Podge on the back side of the fabric. This keeps the fabric from fraying when you cut it and prepares the fabric for the following steps.

Allow the fabric to dry completely.

Trace the letter on the back side of your fabric. Make sure the back side of your letter is facing up so you have the back side of the fabric to the front side of the letter.

Cut the letter out of your fabric.

Line the fabric up carefully on the letter. Work one section at a time. Place a layer of Mod Podge on the wooden letter and lay the fabric on top.

Smooth out the section to which you just added the Mod Podge with a brayer (affiliate link). It will help smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles and give you a smooth surface.

You don’t have to use a brayer. I’ve done it both ways. I really like the brayer. It just makes the job easier and I feel like I get a much more smooth surface.

Wait 15 minutes. Apply a coat of Mod Podge on top of the fabric. This is not a required step, but it will help the fabric stay in place better and often my fabric has little patches that look funny after I stiffen it with the Mod Podge. Adding the coat of Mod Podge on top of the fabric makes those funky spots not noticeable at all.

Done! Cuteness!

The first time I made one of these types of wall art, it felt like it was a project. This time (my 3rd or 4th time with wall art and my who knows how many times for making letters – like my Summer letters and Merry letters) it seems like a quick simple project. Easy peasy and done.

It looks really cute in my daughter’s room and pulls out the cute polka dot sheets and adds more fun to her walls. We just got this hung up last night and I didn’t have a chance to take a picture of it in the room, so I’m going to be mean and make you wait for the final reveal.

I think all I have left to do in her room is to hem the curtains, which I really dislike doing, but I will get that done and then we will be on to the final reveal! Yay! Can’t wait to have her room done and get to show you. After that my youngest daughter is waiting, sort of patiently, for me to get to her room. She has big plans! I just need to save up.
