Have you started looking for gift ideas for this holiday season yet? I’m not quite there, in fact this is a gift that was supposed to be given last holiday season. Anywho…personalized gifts are some of my favorite things to give to friends and family. I’ve got a tutorial to make gorgeous wine glasses for you today. They would make a fantastic personalized gift any time of the year.

My good friend had the audacity to move away…a few years ago. I still haven’t recovered. She has moved a few times since and we are now only about 45 minutes to an hour apart, but we still hardly ever see each other. First, I started working and got busy. Then she started working and got busy. Now with both of us busy it has been WAY too long since we have managed to see each other.

She gave me the best gift for my birthday last year. It was a HUGE wine glass that she blinged out with “Big Joe” on it. If you have ever seen Cougar Town (affiliate link), you will know all about “Big Joe.” 🙂

I wanted to reciprocate with something fun. I found this fantastic Friday Night Wine Glass at World Market. It isn’t nearly as big as “Big Joe,” but I think it will work. This gift was intended for last Christmas, but I never got it made and we haven’t seen each other so I didn’t rush to get it made. This year has slipped by and I thought for sure I would get it done for her birthday. Nope. Gosh, don’t I sound like a great friend. Anyway, I finally got her gift made and I am getting it in the mail…since we don’t have plans or time to see each other for a while longer. I guess it will be her Christmas squared and birthday gift. I better add a bottle of wine or a great gift card for some wine to this gift if I’m covering that many celebrations! 😉

Anyway, I bet you would love to know how to make your own personalize wine glasses. So how about if I stop rambling and give you the tutorial? Sounds good! Let’s do it!

Supplies:

  • Wine Glass (mine is an extra-large “Friday Night Wine Glass“(affiliate link) from World Market)
  • Glass Etching cream (affiliate link)
  • Stencil
  • Paintbrush

Making personalized gifts is so stinking easy you guys! First, you will need to pick what you are personalizing. In this case, I was personalizing a wine glass, but you can use this idea on most anything. I’ve also done candy jars, beer glasses, champagne flutes, and glass bakeware (which is fab for potlucks…you always know which pan is yours!).

After you select what you are personalizing, you will need to select your stencil. You can buy stencils or you can make your own.

Apply the stencil to your glass.

Apply the etching cream to the glass. There are no directions that come with the Armour Etch. I’ve shown you how to use it before, so if you look at this Father’s Day Gift post, it has a great tutorial for you on that part of this project.

After waiting for the cream to etch the glass, run your glass under cool water to remove the cream.

Remove your stencils and wash your glass.

Your personalized glass should now be gorgeous and ready to go.

For some reason, my etching cream was a bit runny this time. I think maybe it had settled because I hadn’t used it in a while. It made it hard to put a thick coat of the cream on the glass. Also because I was working on a glass and not an object that I was only etching one side, I had to leave the glass upright. All of that to say, I had to use a much more thin coat of cream than I have in the past. I can see that in the results. The etchings aren’t quite as consistent and thick as they have been in the past. Hopefully my friend will still enjoy her Friday night wine glass. I’m sure she will especially if she fills it full and enjoys the size of this Friday night wine glass. It holds a whole bottle of wine!
