Half Marathon Training ~ Week 6

Well, another week done! This is the first week that I didn’t complete a long run. Boo!

My training is going really well. I was able to complete both of my shorter runs. I also did the same speed training that I did last week, where I run as fast as I can from one point in the run to another point. In Train Like a Mother: How to Get Across Any Finish Line – and Not Lose Your Family, Job, or Sanity, they describe it as running like your kids are chasing you. They suggest that you do it for 10 minutes…at the end of a long run…Holy cow! Umm, I’m not up to that. So, I just pick one spot on my run and run as fast as I can, it probably only 1 or 2 minutes. It is fun to go that fast and feel like a super fast runner. I want to work toward doing this method of speed training a few times in my 3.5 or 4 mile runs. Right now my IT band won’t go for that, so once works.

As I started the post off with, I didn’t complete my long run for this week. I had planned to on Saturday before driving an hour away for a birthday party. Instead, I went to be kind of late on Friday night. Then we had a big Thunderstorm hit in the early hours of Saturday. I had both kids in my room, scared. Once I finally had the kids taken care of and myself settled back down, I was only going to get about 30 more minutes of sleep if I got up to go running. It would have been about 5 hours of sleep for me. I am an 8 to 9 hour a night kind of girl or I get run down and cranky. I have been burning the candle at both ends too much lately and decided I was going to opt for sleep over a long run. I feel a little guilty, but my Dad did keep telling me to rest after my 10.4 mile run the week before. I don’t think he meant to not run all together, but anyway….I rested!

I have 13 more weeks to go until the half marathon. For some reason that sounds like a really long time, when saying only 16 weeks to go didn’t sound that long. Hope I can make it to keep this up and finish the race in a way that I feel proud of.

If you are just joining in on my training, you can view my half marathon training plan here or view other weekly updates here.

More to Enjoy! 😍

26.2 miles is a lot!! I’m not a runner, but for someone to be able to run half a marathon is awesome. Stay strong and determined, you’ll reach the finish line. πŸ™‚

I too would have chosen to have the extra sleep, keeping yourself well rested and healthy is also a vital part of your training. I had to look up 10.4miles and convert to kilometres WOW that is 16 something kilometres and I could only dream of running that far! You should be very proud of your accomplishments as there are many who can not do what you have done!

Thank you so much! You are right, I need to keep in mind what I am able to do. Even a year ago, I couldn’t do it. I was still in physical therapy and not that far off crutches! I have made great progress!

Hello, a half marathon is a great big thing to do… but 13 weeks does seem a long time… still you are doing heaps of training and your mindset is fantastic. Go you!

You’re totally inspiring me right now! I’ve previously committed to running 2 half marathons, but neither of them I was able to do. The first, I blew out my knee, then years later during training for the other one, I dropped a hammer on my toe and couldn’t walk for weeks and missed the marathon! Now a year after that, I’m recovering from the birth of baby #4, and will slowly start trying build up to a good mileage again. I’m going to go back and read all of your other posts about this, and definitely keep up with you on your journey! Just started following! I’d love for you to stop by my brand new blog and say hi- if you feel so inclined, follow me too! Now I’ve got a lot to catch up on, I just saw a homeschool link in the sidebar. This is my first year homeschooling, and I’m always looking for tips and help!
