You guys, this post has been a long time in making it onto the blog. It goes back to March to be exact. A bit over 4 months ago, we moved our girls rooms around. I’ve got tons of pictures for you today. I’m hoping you enjoy them and that maybe they can give you someΒ girls bedroom ideas for your own house.
Until March of this year, my girls shared a room. I thought long and hard about separating them into their own rooms.
My girls are very close, like best friends. I worried about them being in their own rooms that it would break some of that bond. I worried about lots of aspects of them having their own room. I thought about it a ton. Maybe too much. It boiled down to the fact that they were staying up late EVERY. NIGHT. TALKING. So cute and so sweet that they had all that sister time and chatting. The issue is that they were staying up late every night and they were ALWAYS cranky and our house was suffering.
We tried having one fall asleep in our room, then moving them when we went to bed. It went like that for a long time. I finally just decided it was dumb to keep having them sleep in our room and that they needed their own rooms. It was a good choice. My girls are still close and we now have kids who get sleep and can function during the day. Yay!
Their rooms are still a huge work in progress. In fact, we did our big trip to IKEA, moved their rooms and then haven’t done anything since. As you will see in the pictures, there is still quite a bit of work to do.
When last you saw my girls room, this is what it looked like. We had put their beds back into bunk beds. It gave them more floor space and more place to play on the floor. You can read more about that in my post about Girls Bedroom Ideas if you would like.
Just before we moved them into their own rooms, we took the bunk beds apart. They decided on this sleeping arrangement. Their room was like this for a week or two.
This is what was our playroom. I snapped a few shots right before we started moving furniture. I left the mess for you as well. π If you want to see the playroom at the height of organization (and full of ideas for your own toy storage) you can read my post about Toy Storage: Kid’s Playroom Reorganization.
We had my grandma’s desk in this room. It was re-homed to my cousin’s house. I just didn’t have any room for it in our house with the moving of the rooms.
Opposite side of the playroom before.
The big debate was over who was getting what room. That was such a hard decision. I know lots of people just give the oldest child what they want. Being a youngest child, I don’t like that philosophy. I don’t know why being born first means you should get everything you want and being born later means you shouldn’t even be asked what you want.
We asked and both girls, of course, wanted the larger room. Uh-oh. Now I have to make a tough choice. In the end, I’m not sure I made the right choice, but I think I would probably think that if I had made the opposite choice. I just don’t like disappointing my girls.
I decided to give the smaller room to my older daughter, Snowflake. My younger daughter, Pumpkin, got the larger room. When my older daughter was younger she had some major issues with the bigger room and wouldn’t even go in that room alone. It was a whole big deal, we had some concerns that some of that may resurface. We also felt that she is at an age where her ‘toys’ are getting smaller and she doesn’t need as much space for her things and room to play on the floor. My younger daughter has quite a few larger toys and still loves plenty of room to play. She got the larger room. Like I said, I’m still not sure we made the right choice, but it is done for now.
Snowflake’s new room! The concession for her getting the smaller room, was that she got to pick out a new dresser and I made a neat shelving/desk for her. Eventually, we will paint, get new bedding and decorate.
She picked out this dresser on our trip to IKEA. She loves it.
She has room at the end of her bed for a doll room. Snowflake has tried rearranging her room a number of times already. I see she has my genes for moving things around! π
The IKEA Trofast system and shelves that were in the playroom.Β I showed you this Trofast system in our playroom reogranization. I also showed you how I labeled it so that it would be easier to keep organized. It has just been moved to this room.
This is my masterpiece for Snowflake. I made this desk and shelving unit for her. I will have posts on how I made them for you next week, I think. She loves it and it provides a great place for her to complete her school work.
Now onto Pumpkin’s room. As is glaringly obvious, we patched the holes in the walls and need to paint. This wall used to have my Grandma’s desk and at one time my treadmill. Now it has Pumpkin’s dresser and bed.
The wall opposite has her IKEA Trofast system along with a reading nook in the corner. I’m going to show you the reading nook in more depth in another post.
Love how much the Trofast can hold and how this section keeps her room pretty organized.
Isn’t this just so cute? The shelf with the doll clothes hanging from it is part of my $24 shelving solutionΒ (which is now split up between the two rooms). Love how she has the horses all in the stable.
This room has this funny little corner. It works as a great place to set up a doll shop, house or barn yard. I also have hooks on the walls for her to hang up her backpack and any other bags. There are better pics of this corner and the hooks in the post I wrote about easy toy storage.
She wants her room to be a peachy pink and brown…a cowgirl theme. We needed a hamper for one of the girls rooms. I found this in the summer outdoor Smith & Hawken stuff at Target. While not a traditional hamper, it fits the space and the eventual theme well. It has worked well so far.
Her closet still has the curtains on it like we had for the playroom. We had to modify the shelving in the closet to fit clothes as we had built it for a playroom. We used a Rubbermaid closet system that can be easily modified because it has tracks in the walls. You can see what the closet looked like before in my playroom reorganization post. It has detailed pics for you. It cost just a few dollars to change out her closet to hold her clothes and still hold some toys and some homeschool supplies.
We want to eventually put in sliding closet doors for her closet. We still have the original doors, but they are two doors that swing open. When we used to have them in this room, they were forever knocking into the door to the room and it was just a pain. I think sliding doors are the way to go.
We still have tons of work to do in both rooms.
Snowflake wants a pink, white and blue theme with snowflakes in her room. She wants me to design something neat for over her desk. I think she needs new more mature bedding as well. New curtains will likely go along with the completion of her room.
Pumpkin wants a peachy pink and brown cowgirl theme. We need to paint for sure. She will likely need new curtains and maybe some new bedding for her as well. Of course we need to put in the sliding door. We also have plans and ideas for a rope wall feature.
It all should be really cute when we are done. I need to get busy saving money to finish their rooms. Snowflakes room will go first. That was another concession for getting the smaller room. She gets her room done first.
I plan to show you as we get things done. Would you like that? Would you like to see what we do in their rooms?
What do you think? Should the big room automatically go to the oldest child, or should the rooms be based on something else?
More Fun for You:
THANKS for all our sharp photos of moving your 2 girls from 1 shared bedroom to 2… meaning each has her OWN BEDROOM! Like you mentioned, painting walls, decorating & new bedding for both bedrooms later. I like the look of the white IKEA dresser, so clean & simple/modern. In addition the TROFAST system from IKEA is FAB! What I really like are the “wash me!” woven basket for laundry! THANKS FOR SHARING. I’m anxious to read & view photos of future posts of your 2 girls’ bedrooms … in the next year or so? Sarah Helene in Minneapolis
So glad you liked all the pictures! I love the laundry hamper as well. I think it is so cute. I think some day she may night like it because there isn’t any cover, but I bet I could create something. π Yes, I will get to their rooms, hopefully in the next 12 months. I’m saving up now. Thanks so much for leaving your sweet comment! β₯
I agree with the decision to have the younger child in the larger room. Younger kids toys are larger and they tend to play on the floor more than older kids. Do the girls tend to play together in both rooms or do they migrate to the larger room?
In our family it’ll be an easy decision. When we eventually buy a house, the largest bedroom will go to all 5 girls (even if it’s the master), Tim and I will get the medium sized room, and our one son will have the smallest room. π Of course it could get more confusing if we end up with more than 3 bedrooms, but I think we’d still stick with this plan and make the fourth (smallest) room a office or school storage room.
Thanks, Allyson. They do tend to migrate to the larger room to play. Also because my older daughter is more neat. She would prefer the ‘mess’ of the play be in her sisters room. At first she thought that also meant her sister would have to clean everything up. We had to work on that issue. I remember some friends growing up had done the same thing. The girls had the master bedroom. I always thought that was a combination of fantastic and totally strange! Maybe you guys could find a two story home with a master on each floor. Then you still get a master and so will the girls!
What fun to see into your girls room! It will also be fun to see the progress you make in them. Maybe you could of had the girls toss a coin over the large room. Leaving it up to chance then dissolves any bitterness towards a parent who made the calll. I heard this parenting advice years ago and it works great in situations like this where there seems to be no right answer. I might add though firstborn children had a special inheritance in bible days. They are the “first fruit” from the womb and God treats them a bit differently. You may want to look it up, it is a bit hard for me to explain. Just so you know I am a middle child, so I have those issues! I am a mom of 4 boys so I know it is hard to treat them equally, and also realize they are different! We have an en-suite bedroom with a bathroom which my oldest used until he moved away from college. Then my 2nd oldest moved in and will be there until he moves out. And so on it will go. It works for us! Have a lovely weekend!
So glad you liked seeing all the pics of their rooms. We do something similar. My girls rotate which day is ‘their day.’ On their day, they get to pick where they sit in the car and a few other things. If we have a tie on something, they get to break the tie. It works great so their is no favorite and no arguing. They know their day will come…tomorrow!
Both rooms look great. As the younger of two, I don’t think I had first choice ever. When I was still living with my parents after college, they added on to the house and again my brother got first choice but because he drug his feet, I got the space by default. I was all moved in in a day. lol I’m sure your girls will love their spaces and truly make it their own.
Oh My! I have been inspired yet again. I love your genius idea of putting the bar under the shelving unit for the doll cloths. Why didn’t I think of that.
I will also have to pick up the Trofast system. We have paper boxes right now, but as you can guess they are not holding up so well.
I was wondering, what is the shelving unit that you used on top of the Trofast?
I also love the basket for dirty cloths, it is so pretty. I have been looking for a nice laundry basket for my daughters room, and this is the perfect solution.
Thank you for the inspiration.
I hope your girls love their new rooms, they might have a hard time adjusting now, but when they are older and really want their space they will be great-full.
I’m so glad you could gain an idea or two from my pics! The shelving unit on top of the Trofast is another shelf from IKEA. I don’t remember which system it was from but I bet if you look at an IKEA or on their site you could find it. It was an add on shelf that I thought would work perfectly there from storing some of their larger items. My girls have adjusted to having their own space. They really like it. Though most Friday nights you will find them having a slumber party with their sister. π
the rooms look great, can’t wait to see them all finished. Good for inspiration for my daughters room, we moved house about 3 months ago and her room is still very much a work in progress. We have the wallpaper and all the furniture, just need to get busy with the actual decoration. You have really maximized the space in the wardrobe, I may just have to steal that idea for miss 8’s room, thanks for sharing.
I’m the oldest girl and got the smallest room. However, it was the most private and I could easily come and go without disturbing anyone, even my light sleeping mother. I was also the only kid ever remotely responsible enough to have that room. I did cross country in fall, speech and debate in winter, and soccer in spring, plus theatre when possible. I was out early in the mornings (most, I went running at 5 am) and had nights getting home at 11:30 or later. Granted, my room was navy and black. Yes, it was a dark pit.
Sounds like the room that you had was a great fit for you and all the activities you were involved with. Wow! You were busy and very active.
Lovely ideas. I’m curious if the chalkboard stickers have stayed on your Trofast bins. I can’t get anything to stay on. Your insight would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks! Yes, they have worked. They both stayed on no problem as well as could be moved if needed. It was really nice. I’ve since sold the Trofasts as my girls have moved toward older girls rooms. π Hope you find something that will work for you. π
I love the horse stable! Could you share where you found that? All I can find are doll-size stables. Thank you!
Unfortunately, that stable (if it is the pink one to which you are referring) is a doll stable. It is from Target. The brown fold out stable is a DIY and is also doll sized. I found the directions for making it here (https://beardollyandmoi.blogspot.com/2012/08/how-to-make-doll-ranch.html). Hope that helps.
