Girls Bedroom Ideas ~ Moving My Girls from 1 Room to 2 Rooms

You guys, this post has been a long time in making it onto the blog. It goes back to March to be exact. A bit over 4 months ago, we moved our girls rooms around. I’ve got tons of pictures for you today. I’m hoping you enjoy them and that maybe they can give you some girls bedroom ideas for your own house.

Until March of this year, my girls shared a room. I thought long and hard about separating them into their own rooms.

My girls are very close, like best friends. I worried about them being in their own rooms that it would break some of that bond. I worried about lots of aspects of them having their own room. I thought about it a ton. Maybe too much. It boiled down to the fact that they were staying up late EVERY. NIGHT. TALKING. So cute and so sweet that they had all that sister time and chatting. The issue is that they were staying up late every night and they were ALWAYS cranky and our house was suffering.

We tried having one fall asleep in our room, then moving them when we went to bed. It went like that for a long time. I finally just decided it was dumb to keep having them sleep in our room and that they needed their own rooms. It was a good choice. My girls are still close and we now have kids who get sleep and can function during the day. Yay!

Their rooms are still a huge work in progress. In fact, we did our big trip to IKEA, moved their rooms and then haven’t done anything since. As you will see in the pictures, there is still quite a bit of work to do.

When last you saw my girls room, this is what it looked like. We had put their beds back into bunk beds. It gave them more floor space and more place to play on the floor. You can read more about that in my post about Girls Bedroom Ideas if you would like.

Just before we moved them into their own rooms, we took the bunk beds apart. They decided on this sleeping arrangement. Their room was like this for a week or two.

This is what was our playroom. I snapped a few shots right before we started moving furniture. We had my grandma’s desk in this room. It was re-homed to my cousin’s house. I just didn’t have any room for it in our house with the moving of the rooms.

The big debate was over who was getting what room. That was such a hard decision. I know lots of people just give the oldest child what they want. Being a youngest child, I don’t like that philosophy. I don’t know why being born first means you should get everything you want and being born later means you shouldn’t even be asked what you want.

We asked and both girls, of course, wanted the larger room. Uh-oh. Now I have to make a tough choice. In the end, I’m not sure I made the right choice, but I think I would probably think that if I had made the opposite choice. I just don’t like disappointing my girls.

I decided to give the smaller room to my older daughter, Snowflake. My younger daughter, Pumpkin, got the larger room. When my older daughter was younger she had some major issues with the bigger room and wouldn’t even go in that room alone. It was a whole big deal, we had some concerns that some of that may resurface. We also felt that she is at an age where her ‘toys’ are getting smaller and she doesn’t need as much space for her things and room to play on the floor. My younger daughter has quite a few larger toys and still loves plenty of room to play. She got the larger room. Like I said, I’m still not sure we made the right choice, but it is done for now.

Snowflake’s new room! The concession for her getting the smaller room, was that she got to pick out a new dresser and I made a neat shelving/desk for her. Eventually, we will paint, get new bedding and decorate.

She picked out this dresser on our trip to IKEA. She loves it.

She has room at the end of her bed for a doll room. Snowflake has tried rearranging her room a number of times already. I see she has my genes for moving things around! 🙂

The IKEA Trofast system and shelves that were in the playroom. I showed you this Trofast system in our playroom reogranization. I also showed you how I labeled it so that it would be easier to keep organized. It has just been moved to this room.

This is my masterpiece for Snowflake. I made this desk and shelving unit for her. I will have posts on how I made them for you next week, I think. She loves it and it provides a great place for her to complete her school work.

Now onto Pumpkin’s room. As is glaringly obvious, we patched the holes in the walls and need to paint. This wall used to have my Grandma’s desk and at one time my treadmill. Now it has Pumpkin’s dresser and bed.

The wall opposite has her IKEA Trofast system along with a reading nook in the corner. I’m going to show you the reading nook in more depth in another post.

Love how much the Trofast can hold and how this section keeps her room pretty organized.

Isn’t this just so cute? The shelf with the doll clothes hanging from it is part of my $24 shelving solution (which is now split up between the two rooms). Love how she has the horses all in the stable.

This room has this funny little corner. It works as a great place to set up a doll shop, house or barn yard. I also have hooks on the walls for her to hang up her backpack and any other bags. There are better pics of this corner and the hooks in the post I wrote about easy toy storage.

She wants her room to be a peachy pink and brown…a cowgirl theme. We needed a hamper for one of the girls rooms. I found this in the summer outdoor Smith & Hawken stuff at Target. While not a traditional hamper, it fits the space and the eventual theme well. It has worked well so far.

Her closet still has the curtains on it like we had for the playroom. We had to modify the shelving in the closet to fit clothes as we had built it for a playroom. We used a Rubbermaid closet system that can be easily modified because it has tracks in the walls. You can see what the closet looked like before in my playroom reorganization post. It has detailed pics for you. It cost just a few dollars to change out her closet to hold her clothes and still hold some toys and some homeschool supplies.

We want to eventually put in sliding closet doors for her closet. We still have the original doors, but they are two doors that swing open. When we used to have them in this room, they were forever knocking into the door to the room and it was just a pain. I think sliding doors are the way to go.

We still have tons of work to do in both rooms.

Snowflake wants a pink, white and blue theme with snowflakes in her room. She wants me to design something neat for over her desk. I think she needs new more mature bedding as well. New curtains will likely go along with the completion of her room.

Pumpkin wants a peachy pink and brown cowgirl theme. We need to paint for sure. She will likely need new curtains and maybe some new bedding for her as well. Of course we need to put in the sliding door. We also have plans and ideas for a rope wall feature.

It all should be really cute when we are done. I need to get busy saving money to finish their rooms. Snowflakes room will go first. That was another concession for getting the smaller room. She gets her room done first.
