I’m back today with another post in my series about the Homemade Christmas Gifts I made for our family this year. Today I have a Gift Wrapping Idea for you. I had to come up with a solution for how to mail the glass etched pans. I wanted them to be in bubble wrap. I couldn’t see how to wrap them in paper and have it look nice, so I made Fabric Gift Bags to put the gifts in for mailing. They turned out so cute and the bonus is that each family will now have a reusable gift bag to use for many Christmases to come!
Aren’t they so cute? I love how the bags turned out. I found all the fabric on sale at Hobby Lobby. I bought 2 yards of the red and 1 yard each of the other two fabrics. I was able to make a total of 7 bags with extra of the red fabric to make some cute skirts for our American Girl Dolls, because they ‘needed’ holiday skirts, and still have a bit of the red fabric left over. I probably could have made 8 bags, but I didn’t need 8 and liked the idea of using some of the red fabric for other projects.
Gift Wrapping Ideas ~ Fabric Gift Bags
This is the fabric I used for our relative that celebrates Hanukkah. While it really is more wintry and has nothing to do with Hanukkah. I couldn’t find any Hanukkah type fabric. This was at least cute, blue and white and Snowflake’s favorite animal, so the extra bag I made from this fabric will work perfect to wrap a birthday present in January.
I made the bags the exact same way I made the Favor Bags for our Felicity American Girl Doll Party. I wrote a tutorial in the post, so check that out to learn how to make this type of fabric bag: Fabric Bags Tutorial.
I, of course, had to change the dimensions of the bags. To not only fit the pans, but to fit them in bubble wrap. I tried figuring out the measurements and doing the math, but it didn’t seem to be working as easily as it did for the favor bags. Eventually, I just put a pan in bubble wrap on the fabric and folded the fabric over to figure out how wide I needed the fabric. Then I looked at the height and figured that out by eye-balling it as well. I cut the fabric at 38″ wide x 19″ high for the penguin and Santa fabrics. This includes a 1/2″ seam allowance with the ribbon sewed at 2.5 inches from the top of the bag. I used 36″ of ribbon for each bag as well.
For the Red fabric, as I had more of it, I cut those at 38″ wide x 21″ high to allow for a little bit more pouf at the top once I tied the bow. This includes a 1/2″ seam allowance with the ribbon sewed at 4.5 inches from the top of the bag. I used 36″ of ribbon for each bag as well.
I was able to have some fun with the ties for these bags. I used white grosgrain ribbon, white cord and green pom pom trim, I got from Pick Your Plum. I had been wanting to make a card with the pom pom trim, but hadn’t gotten around to it yet. It seemed like a fun and perfect fit for the Santa bags.
In the end, I have some fabric gift bags that were a perfect fit for the homemade Christmas gifts I made for our family. They fit well in the box and protected the glass pans well. If only shipping didn’t cost as much as the gifts themselves….wouldn’t that be nice….but I am totally dreaming there.
See you back here on Wednesday for another fun Christmas idea!
Very cute!
Thanks!

I think fabric gift bags look SO much nicer than paper, not to mention they can be reused. Yours look great with the fabrics you’ve chosen!!!
My sister-in-law made me a whole bunch as my Christmas gift one year. We have been using them ever since. Best gift ever! I love how easy they are to use as well as the reusable factor.
Thanks so much!
