Training Tuesday: Half Marathon Training Week 11

I’m going to attempt to keep this short as I’m tired. I didn’t sleep well last night and had a long day that ended with Snowflake taking a big spill on her bike and getting pretty banged up. I need to do something other than blog tonight. I hope you understand.

This week in my nutrition and electrolyte replacement learning I tried the things you see above. Well most of them. For the last two weeks, I have actually been eating before my long runs. I don’t eat much because I get up and am running within 30 minutes, but I also realize going out to run 10-11 miles without eating anything is not a good plan.

This week before I went on my 11 mile run, I ate half of a Cliff Bar(affiliate link). I like their bars because I can get them at Trader Joe’s and they source a lot of their ingredients organically. I liked this option and felt like it worked well to get some nutrition in me. It was quick and decently good as well.
For the run, I planned to try the Hammer Heed(affiliate link) during the run. I planned to use the Nuun(affiliate link) after the run. I also thought I would use the Hammer Gel(affiliate link) during the run. I did use the Heed(affiliate link) and the  Nuun(affiliate link).
The short story is that I am 100% converted to using some form of electrolyte replacement. It makes a huge difference. The Hammer package says they will guarantee that I will notice a difference in my performance and let me tell you I did! It was great! I have never felt so good during an 11 mile run. I know the weather was cooler and that made a difference but I really believe the Hammer Heed(affiliate link) made a huge difference. It is formulated for athletes and I felt it. I still felt strong and like I could actually complete an 11 mile run. I did and I did it with a good time. In addition to that, I felt like my recovery was better and that I didn’t lose it in the afternoon as much as I typically do. In fact, I felt so good during the run, I didn’t use the gel. I just didn’t feel like I needed it. Which, if you read below, you will understand more about why this is significant.

As you can see above, I have a lot of ‘rest’ and ‘not done’ above. For whatever reason, this week was a tired week, where I opted to sleep rather than get up to exercise. I don’t do that often, but this week, I did it 4 days. I did get in all my runs. I really wasn’t sure if I was going to go running for my long run. When I went to bed on Friday, my neck was really hurting and I just felt tired and as though maybe I was starting to come down with something. I got up Saturday and thought I would just try. If I needed to, I would just come home.

As you read above, the run went great and I was shocked at how well I ran, my pace and how good I felt during the run. While I’m not super happy about the price tag for the Hammer Heed, I will definitely use it again. I do have one or two other products I bought last week that I plan to try as well.

Thanks for tuning in again. I will see you again next week.

Happy running to you!

Hi there! New to your blog, and contemplating a half marathon myself. At what point during your run did you use the Heed? Thanks! Stefanie

I had the Heed in my handheld water bottle. I drank it all through out the run. Hope that helps and welcome to my blog…glad you stopped by!

Thanks so much! The lemon-lime was OK. In the post going up tomorrow morning about my training I talk about the Strawberry. I preferred the flavor of the strawberry vs. the lemon lime.
