Sewing a Pom Pomrific American Girl Doll Comforter

Hey, guys! I made these doll comforters for my girls back at the beginning of the summer, but as often happens, other things came up and it takes me a while to get to share things with you. Today, I finally get to share the sewing pattern for making this adorable doll comforter with pom pom trim! I love pom poms and the pom pom trim just makes these so cute!

I use the term ‘sewing pattern’ a bit loosely as there isn’t a set pattern so much as a set of directions that you can modify the size to fit your needs. I had shown you this pattern a few years ago, but when I added the new doll bunk beds for my girls, we needed new bedding as well. I’ve already shown you the mattress for the beds as well as the reversible sheets. For the comforters, I knew I wanted to add some fun trim this time. I also added some batting in between to make the comforters a little bit more fluffy. It all turned out so cute. So let me show you how to make your own pom pomrific doll bed comforter. 

Supplies:

• 2 different fabrics – 1/4 yard or slightly larger of each for each comforter
• Thread to match
• Pom pom trim(affiliate link)- I think I used 3 yards per comforter
• Quilt batting
• Pins – I need pink pins like these (affiliate link)

Cut out your fabric to the size that you need. Our bunk beds measure  19″ x 12″. I cut my fabric at 21″ x 18″ and another at 21″ x 19″. When you measure your bed, you will want to add 2″ to the length and anywhere between 6″ and 7″ to the width. That will allow enough for your seams as well as allow the comforter to hang over the edge of the bed.

Start by sewing your pom-pom fringe to the right side of your fabric. Do this with a basting stitch.

Pin the pom pom trim and sew at 1/2″ or just shy of that mark. The corners will require you to pin carefully and sew carefully.

After sewing the pom pom trim onto the right side of the fabric, pin the right sides of the two patterns of fabric together with one layer of quilt batting on the bottom of your fabric sandwich. You will need to be careful of how you pin your layer with the pom pom trim. It just took me a little bit of patience to make sure all the pom pom trim was out of the way.

So, just because I always find this part confusing and often have to rip seams, your fabric sandwich should be: batting, fabric one right side up, fabric two (with trim) right side down.

Sew using a 1/2′ seam, or just on the inside of your trim sewing line. Leave an opening at the top for turning the sandwich right side out. Turn right side out and sew a 1/4″ top stitch to close your comforter and help hold it in place through play and use.

My sewing is NEVER perfect, so you can see some of the little solid parts of the pom pom trim. My girls and I could care less. The comforters are so cute! The pom pom trim just adds so much cuteness!

My oldest daughter, Snowflake, picked out these patterns. It goes really well with her new bunk bed.

Pumpkin, my youngest daughter, picked out these combinations…oh and she and I made that cute little nightstand. It was a fun little project to make together.

Both of my girls love their new comforters. The added batting in the middle makes them nice and fluffy and extra cute.

We also made the pillows for the bed together. Those were another fun project to do together.
