Kids Closet {Organizing Ideas}

Do you struggle with how to keep your kid’s closet organized? I do. My two girls share a room and therefore share a closet. For quite some time, things worked and worked well for us. As they have grown, their needs have changed and the closet had gotten to be a jumbled mess. Today, I’m going to show you how our kid’s closet went from jumbled to organized with room to spare. I’ve got some neat tricks for you.
Kids Closet
Blech! Can you tell we have a shoe problem? Also, the center portion of the closet was meant to hold sheets, sweaters, and small blankets. This was actually pretty tidy, it was usually a bit messier with blankets all over the shelves and floor. The over the door organizer that used to hold burp cloths and receiving blankets now was meant to hold some Girl Scout swaps and such and so on. It was an overstuffed mess as well and not serving its purpose.Kids Closet

With a few changes and some neat tricks, this is what the closet looks like now. Well…after I tidied up the floor a bit because they are still kids and clothes and such still end up on the floor. We have been using this new organization for a few months now and it is still working, which for me is the real test.

I currently have the closet organized with the right side of the closet holding all of Pumpkin’s clothes and shoes. On the left side is all of Snowflake’s clothes and shoes.
Kids Closet

Let’s take a look at Pumpkin’s side of the closet. Ahhh… I love how it looks! I primarily use the closet for their clothes. Their dresser only holds their socks, undergarments, tights, leggings, and PJ’s. This is all of her clothes.

Kids Closet
These Multi Huggable Hangers(affiliate link) are my favorite space saving trick. Right now, I have 4 of them for Pumpkin. Those four hangers hold 8 skirts and 8 to 10 pairs of pants. Can’t beat that! Until I splurged and bought these hangers, everything was packed in there pretty tight and it was hard to both find things and keep them tidy or organized. The rest of the space is used for ‘regular’ hangers for her shirts and dresses. She has plenty of room to spare.

Kids Closet
On Snowflake’s side of the closet, things look very similar. She wants her shirts organized by color, which I don’t like but she does so whatever, right? I know organizers always oodle over a color coordinated closest. I prefer to put the freshly cleaned items at the back so the older items are closer to the front. To me, it keeps the rotation going so you know what you haven’t worn in a while as well as what you haven’t worn for that season. It makes it easy to know what to purge.
Kids Closet
I used the Multi Huggable Hangers(affiliate link) again for Snowflake. She has 3 of them. They hold 4 skirts and 10 pairs of jeans. Once again, I think these hangers are miracle workers. I didn’t like spending the money on them, but it has been worth every penny.

Kids Closet
We solved the shoe issue in two different ways. For Pumpkin, we bought a small inexpensive shelf at Target. It looks like this one on Amazon, ClosetMaid 24-Inch Closet Organizer(affiliate link), but I really don’t think I spent $20 on the one that I got. It works for the most part, but she is six and often just throws the shoes in there (or the living room floor) and doesn’t put them on the shelf.

For Snowflake’s side, I didn’t want a shelf taking up space for long hanging items (more of an issue in the summer than the winter, when she wears more pants). She liked the idea of continuing to use the hanging shoe racks we already had. I got mine at the dollar spot at Target. They usually have them at back to school time. She seems to have been able to keep up with putting her shoes away, so it seems to be working.

Kids Closet
For the center portion of the closet, shown above in side by side pictures, I kept the top shelf for spare sets of sheets. The next shelf down holds Snowflake’s sweaters. The green bin you see is her new home for her Girl Scout items (swaps, etc as well as her Junior notebook). It is working so much better than the over the door hanger. Did you see how we matched the color of the bin to her level of Girl Scouts? Aren’t we clever?

Below the green bin is a shelf for Pumpkin’s sweaters. Below that, she also has a Girl Scout bin as she is a Daisy Girl Scout this year. Again, we matched the color of the bin to the Girl Scout level. Pumpkin embellished her bin with a matching pom pom! The bottom, floor space, often goes unused, but since we had snow this winter, the boots are out and this is a great spot for them to sit and dry.

Kids Closet
Another thing I do in the closet that helps it stay organized is to group the clothes by season. I keep lots of clothes that I think may fit the following season. The clothes that are in season are on the lower racks where the girls can reach them. The out of season clothes go on the upper racks that are harder to reach.

Now I have a couple of tricks for you.
Kids Closet
Have you ever bought clothes, they are usually pajamas, that came on this type of hanger? These hangers are like gold! Keep them! For years, this was how I organized the closet, let my kids get dressed on their own, and saved space as well. I could hang a complete outfit on one hanger. It took up the space of one item but held two items. In the morning, my girls could go grab a hanger and get dressed and they wouldn’t come out dressed in some funky outfit. Magic and space saving!
Kids Closet
Now that the girls are older and want to create their own outfits, I don’t hang many of their clothes on the double hangers. We are using more of these huggable multi hangers. As you can see above, this is how I use the one hanger to hold 5 pairs of jeans. These are Snowflake’s jeans. She is a kid’s size 10-12. I’m not sure I would put more than 4 pairs of jeans if it were any larger size, just because of the weight.

Kids Closet
Here is our closet one more time. Before and After.
Kids Closet
Don’t you just love the end result? We sure do!

Do you have any other space saving tips for a kid’s closet? Other kid’s closet organizing ideas? Please share in the comments, we would love to hear them.

I LOVE this! I think it might be time for my girls to get closet organizers. They are 5 and 10 and have their own rooms, but the closets hold their hanging clothes and coats, but also there are barbie toy organizers and a fabric bin of shoes and it’s getting to bother me. I think its time for a system of some sort. Thanks for the inspiration!

You are welcome for the inspiration. I hope it helps. I bet having a systemm of some kind would help them be able to put some things away. My kids at least know where things go and will put them away when I tell them too. I guess that is what we can hope for, right?
      Take care,
      KC

lol! That is funny! Yes, you are right, we like Crazy 8 mostly. Though my youngest likes Gymboree as well. We just don’t make it there very often.

Excellent ideas! My son’s closet could certainly use some organizing. Little ones seem to grow out of clothes so fast!

Thanks! They sure do seem to out grow clothes very fast. My girls are a little older now, so it isn’t quite so fast, which is really nice.

Yeah, I understand. Sometimes when I tackle an organizing project it can feel really overwhelming. I always try to break it down somehow into smaller chunks so it makes it not feels so daunting.
