I promised you I would be back today with the next part of the Handmade Christmas Gifts I am making for our family this year. Today I’m showing you the Gift in a Jar that is part of the whole gift I am sending. Once again, if you are my parents, in-laws, or a sibling of mine, please stop reading and wait for your package to arrive at your house! Thanks!
If you aren’t one of those people, let me show you this fun and yummy gift that goes perfectly with the etched glass pans I showed you in my last post.
I found this idea on the Betty Crocker site and promptly pinned it to my Gift Ideas Pinterest board. I love the idea of giving our family something they can cook in their new pan (Handmade Christmas Gifts – Etched Glass Pan) and something that goes with the current holiday season.
These were really easy to put together. Just, gather all your supplies and your jars. (A printable version of the recipe is at the bottom of this post.) Layer the ingredients in the jars and you are done. I added some fabric, a tag and another cute wrapping idea to my jars. I will show you those on Friday, with a free printable to use with your own jars.
I modified the original recipe because we have some family that celebrate Christmas and some that celebrate Hanukkah. I wanted to make a Hanukkah version as well as the Christmas version. To make the Hanukkah version, I just substituted blue and white m&m’s rather than red and green.
This was an easy gift to put together. Not only that, I made an extra jar for our family to try….mmmm, they sure were yummy brownies!
I made some of the jars with mint m&m’s….oh my gosh, they were so yummy!
I’ve got a free printable for you along with a cute idea of ‘decorating’ or ‘wrapping’ the jars. Come on over to that post to check it out: Gift in a Jar (Gift Tag Printable). I’ll see you there!

Christmas or Hanukkah Candy Brownie Mix
by K Coake @ The Real Thing with the Coake Family
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 35 to 40 minutes
Ingredients (16 Brownies)
- 1 cup red and green candy-coated chocolate candies (or blue and white candy for a Hanukkah themed brownie mix)
- 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup unsweetened baking cocoa
- 1/2 cup Gold Medal® all-purpose flour
- 2/3 cup packed brown sugar
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup coarsely chopped walnuts
- 2/3 cup vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 3 eggs
Instructions
To make the jars:
Place 2 tablespoons of the chocolate candies in small resealable food storage plastic bag; seal. In 1-quart glass jar, layer in order the 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons flour, salt, remaining chocolate candies, cocoa, 1/2 cup flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar and walnuts. Place candies in bag on top of the walnuts. Cover tightly. If desired, cover lid with 7 to 8-inch square of fabric tied with ribbon or raffia. Attach tag with recipe and baking directions. (I will have a printable tag on my blog)
To make the brownies:
To make brownies, heat oven to 350°F. Grease 8- or 9-inch square pan. Set aside candies in plastic bag. In large bowl, mix contents of jar with oil, vanilla and eggs. (If brown sugar has become slightly firm, break up with fork.) With spoon beat about 30 strokes until well blended. Spoon and spread in pan. Sprinkle candies from bag over top.
Bake 35 to 40 minutes or until set. Cool completely, about 45 minutes. For brownies, cut into 4 rows by 4 rows.

Where is the printable version of the brownie recipe?
It’s actually down below the post. It isn’t conveniently printable. This is an old post and what I used at that time to create a printable recipe no longer exits, so it’s all just been converted to text. I’m sorry for the inconvenience.
