As I’m sure you are aware, Father’s Day is approaching really quickly. My girls and I got together and came up with an idea for a Father’s Day Gift. Since their Dad really likes candy, we decided to make him a candy jar. While we were at it, we decided to make jars for both Grandpa’s, too.

As usual, I took pictures along the way and have a tutorial for you. That way you can make your own whether for a gift or for yourself.

For this project you will need:

  • Glass jar(affiliate link) – We got ours at Target for very reasonable prices
  • Glass etching cream(affiliate link)
  • Paint brush
  • Stencil
  • Candy or Snacks to fill the jar

First, you will want to decide on the wording for your jar. Then you will need to make your own stencil.

Using your paintbrush, apply a coat of the etching cream to the places you want etched. I usually like to kind of glop the cream on and leave it for about 10 minutes.

After about 10 minutes, I like to go back and use my brush to smooth the cream out. This works well to make sure I have gotten the cream in all the areas and that it is coating well. I then leave the cream for another 20 minutes. Or for hours like this project because I got sidetracked with other things. It will all work out fine! Rinse the cream completely off, remove your stencil and rinse off any remaining residue off.

You are already done! That was easy wasn’t it?! I made three jars, one for my husband, one for my Dad, and one for my Father-in-law.

I made each one to suit their likes. My Dad is a snack hound…so his needed to be for his favorite snack. My husband and Father-in-law both like candy, so theirs are candy jars.

Finally, make sure to fill the jar before you give it to the recipient. I’m sure they will really appreciate this touch!

We will be placing my husbands candy jar on the counter right near our new snack jar filled with healthy snacks for kids. It might be a little hard to see the candy right there, but having it labeled that it is Daddy’s should help them only get things from their snack jar. Let’s hope, right? πŸ™‚

My girls are so excited to give their Daddy his new candy jar. I think he will really like it as well. What do you think?

These are so cool! You’ve inspired me to try an etching project. My hubby loves wine…maybe I’ll etch initials onto four wine glasses. Thanks for sharing, and for linking up to Frugalicious Friday!

Thank you! I just did some beer glasses that came out really well. I will post about them eventually. I want to do some wine glasses for myself. I think that would look really neat!

Those are neat. I know that my husband would fill his with Skittles or M&Ms. The maddening thing is that he is so disciplined about eating them. I had never seen that etching cream before. Very cool.

Thanks! My husband would not fit into the disciplined category AT ALL! lol! I probably make him made with being disciplined in how I eat….haha! Though if I had a jar like this filled with M&M’s, it would be bad, very bad. Those things are so darn addictive!
      Take care,

Thanks, Mom! The only problem is that I have his jar filled already. You will have to come up with something else. Though knowing how fast Dad goes through snacks…maybe you should get him some more! lol!

Love this idea – and it looks easy enough for me to handle. I have been looking for a pretty container for coffee that I can sit on the counter – now I can make my own!

I bet this would be so great with coffee! I think the dark beans would really accent the etching and make it really stand out. Great idea!

Thank you! It isn’t cheap. My small bottle was $10, but I have been able to complete so many projects with that one bottle that it has felt worth the $10.

Oh my goodness! This is such a great gift idea. I didn’t look at any Father’s Day gift ideas this year so I missed this one, but it is fantastic. I love that style jar too. This would be a great teacher jar too. I gotta have my snacks. πŸ™‚

Thank you, Libby! I’m sure it was hard to even think about Father’s Day this year. Your right, it would make a great teacher jar. We have a larger version of this jar filled with snacks for my girls. It works perfectly! I have to keep it a bit out of view or I would eat them all the time. lol!
      Take care,
      KC
