Chalk Activities for Kids and Parents ~ Real Summer of Fun

I’m ready for some more fun with my girls and for some fun activities for kids and parents can do together. This is so going to be a Real Summer of Fun! I’m working to make it a summer of fun for you as well, which is why almost the whole month of June I’ve got all kinds of ideas for you. Today, I’ve got fun ideas to get everyone outside and have some fun with chalk.

I know my girls love to play with chalk outside on the driveway, even though our driveway is a bit steep, they still love to draw and play games. Today, I’ve got my friend Kat who blogs at Confessions Of The Perfect Mom with 5 of her family’s favorite ways to play with chalk and enjoy some time together.

For our Real Summer of Fun activities for kids and parents today (you can see the rest of our Real Summer Fun activities in this post), let’s start with something that everyone loves: Chalk (Affiliate link – We just picked up this fun set of chalk…so many colors!). Kids love it, adults have fond memories of playing with it, and let’s be honest it just screams summer. Plus it is so simple (not to mention cheap), all you need is a piece of chalk.

Hopscotch

There is a reason that Hopscotch has lasted as long as it has. It can be as simple as you want, or as complicated. Your imagination is the limit. My girls like the traditional 10 square board the best, though we have had some crazy hopscotch boards. To play, draw out 10 connecting squares and throw a small rock onto the board. This space is now a no-go square. Jump to the end of the board (missing the square with the rock). Once you get to the end, you must come back to the start line. The hard part is, you must do it backwards while still missing the square.

Tic-Tac-Toe

My girls also love Tic-Tac-Toe. There is something fun about a little friendly competition while laying on the warm concrete with a lemonade in hand. The board is easy enough to draw out, just a hashtag. Then each player picks a symbol. The classic is X’s and O’s, but you can have anything. We typically like hearts and smiley faces. Each player takes a turn placing their symbol in one space on the board. The first to get three in a row wins. Simple and fun.

Four- Square (or even Two-Square)

Okay so I lied a bit, this one needs more than a piece of chalk. You also need a ball of some sort. Bad bad bad, I know. But everyone has a ball of some sort. It could be a classic four square ball, or any ball that bounces. We use a plastic Frozen ball that we picked up at Target for $3.00. It is a bit smaller than a normal playground ball, but it works well for Baby (my three-year old). If you have four of you, then Four-Square would work. If you don’t have that many, the game is just as fun as a Two-Square version. Draw out either four or two connecting squares. Each player must stay inside their square. You will hit the ball into the squares and the player in that square must hit it back to another player after it has bounces in their square. If you hit it out, you lose a point; if the player you hit it to misses you gain a point.

Reading Maze

This can be laid out similar to Hopscotch if you like, or you can just write out the words. My little girls like this game and it is a bit of education thrown in there, so I like it too. For my youngest, I will draw out boxes and place letters inside. For my middle daughter, I will place sight words in the boxes. Each player starts behind the starting line while you yell out the word/letter. The player then must look at the boxes in the row in front of them and jump to the correct one. If they miss, then they have to go back to the starting line and start over. Play continues until the first player reaches the end of the maze.

Sidewalk City

Last but certainly not least, as it is a favorite for my kiddos, we like to draw sidewalk cities. We draw them complete with roads, buildings, and parks. We have even had each girl draw their own city then connect them with a system of freeways. That way they can “visit” each other. You can layout your city however you like. My girls then bring out all their cars/trucks, little people, and lets not forget the My Little Ponies for an afternoon of fun.
