My Blog Becomes Official ~ Or Making a Business Card Holder

Recently, I made myself and this blog feel all official. I designed and ordered business cards. Then I made myself a business card holder

I was headed to a blog conference and knew that there would be plenty of networking and need for business cards. I also knew that I wanted something cute and pink in which to store my business cards. I set out to find a free pattern that was possibly a little different and would reflect both me and my blog.
Business Card HolderWhat do you think? I love how it turned out. I found a free pattern and have some tips for you on making your business card holder.

I got the free pattern from the Amy Butler site. {Amy Butler Business Card Keeper Pattern} I had not discovered Amy Butler before this. Oh my! I love her fabrics. I tried to find some locally with which to sew this business card holder, but I couldn’t find any in the colors I wanted. I made do with one fabric I had (do you recognize the fabric from my recent office organization?) and one new one that I found.

Being my first time to work with her patterns, I would say that they are quite wordy. Sometimes I had to read through the pattern directions a couple of times to understand what they meant, but I managed to figure things out. This pattern was fairly easy to put together, though my seam ripper did get a little workout. In the pattern, they give you only one piece from which to cut your fabric. They only give the piece for the flap. Since I don’t have a rotary cutter, I pin and cut. I made a file with all the correct sizes to use to cut your fabric.

I’ve got those pattern pieces for you at the bottom of this post.

I also made one mistake that may have been in the pattern directions, but I didn’t understand it. You can learn from my mistake.
Business Card HolderWhen you cut your flap pieces, you need to cut one piece with the wording facing up and one piece (probably your lining) with the wording facing the opposite direction and down. I cut both of my pieces with the pattern piece facing the same direction. As you can see above in the top left picture, my two pieces were then identical. When it was time to pin the exterior and the lining right sides together, it wouldn’t work. Time to use the good old seam ripper and try again. I tried to take pictures of the correct way to cut out your lining, so maybe it would help you when you make your business card holder.

After that snafu, it was pretty straightforward to put together. The hardest part, to me, was putting the Peltex into the little secret opening and getting it in the right place. The Peltex goes in as one of the last steps and serves as support for the back of the business card holder.
Business Card HolderAll done! I love how it turned out. The only thing I don’t like is that for some reason, my Velcro doesn’t seem to want to stay closed all the way. I have no idea why.

I love the fun design and the fabrics I picked.
Business Card HolderThe next thing I had to do was to order business cards. Which means, I needed to design my business cards. I found this great post with 5 tips for Blogging Business Cards. It was so helpful and gave me a visual idea of how to get all the necessary info onto the card.
Business Card HolderMy business cards arrived, and I have to say, it was a moment of feeling very official at this blogging thing! Even though I have been working my butt off for over a year now, seeing the business cards sure make it all feel so much more official. Business Card HolderThe cards fit perfectly into the business card holder….phew! For a moment, when I was almost done sewing it, I thought maybe it was going to be too small. I made the business card holder pink because I like pink, but I also knew it would match my cards…oh la la!
Business Card HolderThere you have it. I’m all official now! It is the little things along the journey that seem to help me fell official…apparently, all the hundreds of hours I have put into this blog don’t make me feel official, but order some business cards and make a business card holder….that does it for me. Go figure! You can feel official too, by making your business card holder and ordering some business cards. Amazing what a little project can do for one’s psyche.

Well, now that makes sense. I tried to comment a few days ago…I think? But couldn’t figure out how. LOL! All is really good here. Busy. But I never have known a time when I wasn’t so. I kinda like life in the fast lane. 🙂 I finally got another post up. Seems the days are coming faster than I can write. Haha! By the way, I just noticed your AH-mazing 4.17 mile run!!! Woohoo! I so want to be a runner. Guess the only way to become one is to get moving. Hmmm…novel concept. Ha! Thanks for always commenting back. Happy Thursday, dear lady!

Sorry about that Lisa! I didn’t realize that the comments had been turned off. I need to head over and read your new post. I thought I was following you, but I’m not sure I’ve seen it in my feed yet. I need to fix that. Yes, the only way to become a runner is to start moving….lol! I ran 6 miles in the nasty hot humid this morning. Summer running just stinks, but since I have a half marathon in September, I get to do it. The medal sure is going to be great at the end of that race! Take care and have a fantastic day!

I actually just made one last night as fathers day gift! It’s based on another blog tutorial and is very different to this. Hopefully I can find a reason to make a more girly one now using your tutorial 🙂

    Thanks very much!!

    K.C.,
This is such a cute pattern. I have read some of Amy Butler’s books and I really like her patterns. You did a great job with the fabric choice (love pink!) and with this tutorial. Thanks for sharing! Your cards look pretty cute too, from what I could see of them. 🙂
Saw you on Craft-O-Maniac. I posted something, as well. I’d love for you to stop by if you have time. New follower on GFC and will head on over to Facebook and follow there too.

HI there KC! Just letting you know I’m linking this post to one of mine tomorrow. I also “stole” an image of your business card holder to include in the post. I truly hope you are okay with me doing so. If not, please let me know before 6:00 am tomorrow and I will remove the links before publishing the post. I hate to contact you this way but I couldn’t find your email address here. I’m sure I’m looking right at it and just not seeing it. I do have your business card but it is at home and I’m at work. I’m trying my best to get this post written during my late lunch hour. 🙂

Hope all is well and you are gearing up for a Very Merry Christmas!!!

Thank you so much, Lisa! I appreciate the share and for letting me know. Things have been topsy turvy lately. My Aunt (whom I had talked with you about and gotten ideas for her care package) just finished her chemo and radiation. The following day she took her dog for a walk and was hit by a car and killed. My girls and I went home for a week. It just sucks. I thought of letting you know since we had talked about her. Anyway, I hope your are having a great Christmas season.
      Take care,
      KC
