I don’t know about your house, but at my house, we are always on the hunt for new lunch ideas that will work well in the lunch box and be super easy to make as well. I came up with the idea to try making a warm sandwich using pizza dough. I didn’t know it at the time, but it is a sandwich that is a Stromboli style sandwich.
Oscar Mayer asked me if I would try their Selects Natural lunch meats and they offered to sponsor this post. I love supporting and using products that are natural and have no artificial preservatives, colors, and by-products, so it was an easy yes for me to work with Oscar Mayer. I took the challenge and had fun coming up with a new idea for our lunch.
At my house, because I have one child homeschooling and one in public school, I need lunches that will work for me to make them one day and serve them the following day. My youngest daughter and I make and eat lunch one day and my older daughter takes it for her lunch the following day. I was trying to come up with a fun new sandwich that would be quick and easy, work well for our lunch schedule, as well as be delicious.
I’ve got the full recipe for you to download at the end of this post. The secret to this recipe is to preheat your oven with a stoneware pan(affiliate link) in the oven while it is preheating like I do to make yummy pizza every week. That way when you add the sandwich to the oven to cook the hot pan will immediately start cooking the bottom and you will end up with a crisp bottom to your sandwich instead of a soggy mess.
I rolled out the pizza dough and added my salsa and guacamole since we love southwest or Mexican-inspired flavors. I did grow up in the Southwest after all. π
Next, I layered the cold cuts on. I selected the Oscar Mayer Selects Natural Applewood Smoked Turkey and Rotisserie Seasoned Chicken. I thought they would make a great combination. I love that they are good quality cold cuts and that they have no artificial ingredients. Guess what…they are totally delicious as well. My daughter and I may have snacked on a few slices while we were cooking. It sure would be nice if I could make lunch on time one day…that rarely happens, especially when I’m working a recipe for the blog. Lunch was a bit late. π
After adding the condiments, meat, and cheese, just fold the dough over on top. Use your pizza peel, lightly dusted with corn meal, to slide the Stromboli into the oven.
After 9-12 minutes, you will have a delicious Stromboli like sandwich with southwest flavors. Yum! We paired our sandwich with some pomegranate seeds and I always love something crunchy at lunch, so we usually have a serving of chips as well. It was such a yummy lunch.
My older daughter took it to school the following day. She said it worked OK in the lunch box, but not great. That is a bit of a bummer that it isn’t a great fit for our weekday lunches, but it is quick, easy and yummy. I think it will be a great quick dinner idea on those busy nights when I don’t have a freezer meal ready to go.
So, one of the things that I do when I work with a brand like Oscar Mayer is to get to know them on social media. I have to tell you that I may now be stalking them on Instagram! They have their Wienermobile and they travel the country. Know anyone that likes to road trip…oh yeah that would be us! I saw that the Wienermobile was at one of the Pink Elephants we were at last summer just a few weeks after us. I totally need the Wienermobile to be somewhere on our trip this summer. π Yep, I’m a dork like that. However, you should stalk them on social media too, because they have great ideas and fun pictures. Y

This Stromboli is making my mouth water! When are you moving next door so I can stop by for lunch??
It is a shame you can’t see the recipe unless you give your email address. It actually looks really delicious. I know as a busy working Mom, I would navigate away from your blog because of it. Perhaps you need to rethink this?
Sorry, you find it frustrating. It is the way that I run my business, which is obviously not for everyone. I’m happy with the results I’ve had with requiring an email address, and very few to almost no people have complained about it. It has done great things for my business. Thanks for your feedback.
This looks amazing! What a perfect lunch.
Thanks! It was super yummy. π
