Running My First 5k!

Yay! This past weekend, I ran my first 5k. I have entered 5k’s in the past and have completed them. I wasn’t a runner at the time. I mostly walked them with a little bit of running.

This was my first 5k to run the full thing and it was my first race that I ran the whole race.

If you are a follower of my blog, you may recall that not too long ago, I ran my first 10k.{My First 10K…Yay!} However, due to a flared up IT band, I wasn’t able to run the whole race. While I didn’t have to walk a ton of the race and I am super happy with my race time, I wasn’t able to run the full race.

Me with my girls before the race!
Mr. T and the girls came for the whole thing as the race didn’t start until a little bit later. I actually have pictures of the start and the finish of the race. You can see me just past the starting line, I’m rocking my running skirt for this race.

Most of the back half of this course is uphill, so I wasn’t sure what my time would be. I hadn’t been able to train on hills to make sure my IT band continued to do well.

Out on the course, a woman kept running right by my side. I decided to strike up a small conversation – not much we were working hard. We ended up helping each other pace and keep going on those hills. We stayed together for the last 2+ miles. It was nice to have someone right next to me that was keeping on, it kept me keeping on even on those last 2 hills where I wanted to slow down. I couldn’t let her down or let her get ahead of me either.

Her name is Robin. She is pictured above. Thank you Robin for pushing me and racing with me! I saw in the race results that she is in the age division above mine and that she placed 6th in her age division. Congrats Robin! Awesome race!

When we finished the race, my app showed that I had run 3.6 miles in 27:52 which it said was a 7:49 pace. I was ecstatic! I never expected to race that fast. I went for most of the day thinking that I had done an amazing job, better than I ever thought I could.

I was disappointed when I got the email with the official race results. I embarrassed to admit that, but it is how I felt. My app had messed up. My official race results are still good, but after spending half of the day thinking I had done simply amazing. I was disappointed.

I know my results are good…I just need my heart and mind to catch up to that.

My official results:

  • 26:36 for the 5k
  • 8:33 average pace per mile
  • Overall 172nd (out of the 896 registered competitive runners)
  • 59th overall woman to finish
  • 8th in my age division (40-44)
Those are fantastic. I am amazed that I was in the top 10 for my age!

I wish I could shake my disappointment…I’m working on it.  It seems dumb because had I seen the real results first, I would have been so happy with them. Maybe this is going to push me to work toward a faster pace so one day I can see those results and they will be real not a mistake.

After the race, Snowflake and Pumpkin got to see Snoopy and they sweet talked this DJ (pictured above) into some free t-shirts. They told her we listen to her all the time and while that is the type of music we listen to the most, we listen to satellite radio not local. Anyway, Snowflake was telling her how we listen to her all the time. She thought both girls were so well mannered and sweet she gave them a t-shirt. Later, I asked Snowflake why she told her we listen to her all the time…she had no idea this was not the station we listen to. Oh well, I think we may have made the DJ happy.

A rare family photo! Thank you to the kind man who offered to take a photo of all of us! 🙂

A successful 5k and a fun family day!

More to Enjoy! 😍

Yes, I have my next 5k on Saturday. It is in a different state while we are on a trip. Should be flat and no humidity….so we will see how I do timewise. Thanks for stopping by and for commenting. It is fun to hear from other runners.

The best part is that you know you can do it. You have your PR now for a 5k so now ou can strive to beat it. Running is addictive. When if irst started I ran a couple of 5k’s and then started training for a marathon. Not only does running help you feel great about yourself but you look amazing. In ever would have picked you to be in that age group. Congratulations! Thanks so much for sharing at Whimsy Wednesdays m

Awesome job! I can’t even run longer than a minute right now so running an entire 5K is awesome to me! I’m hoping to be able to do a 5K by the end of the year!

I would love it if you would share this on my new link party:https://www.maidendshade.com/2012/05/youve-got-it-maiden-dshade-link-party-1.htmlThanks!
