Have you fallen into the same mom trap I have? You’ve decorated almost every room in your house, but your own. It’s not to say I haven’t decorated my bedroom, but it has been a LONG time since doing so. Today, I’m sharing master bedroom ideas and decorating tips as inspiration for both of us.
While I’ve decorated my room, it’s been about 12 years since I’ve done a full room makeover… and I was pregnant with my daughter and then tried to do some things right after she was born. We had just moved into this house, and EVERYTHING needed a makeover, so our room got a coat of paint and new lighting, and we moved on.
12 years later, I’m craving a little space that is mine. I’ve partnered with The Home Depot and they sponsored this post to help me create this mood board. It’s my inspo for my upcoming master bedroom makeover. All the links will take you directly to The Home Depot where you can add anything you like to your cart and shop for everything you need for your makeover project. This post also contains affiliate links.
You can take inspo from my ideas or create your own inspo board. They’re helpful to begin to define what you like and want in your space. I’ll sprinkle my tips for you throughout the post and make sure to bold them, so you don’t miss them.
My husband recently moved out. I’d wanted to take care of my bedroom even before he moved out. Now that he’s moved out it feels like the perfect time to figure out what I like and want in my space and create a little mom retreat. A place that I can take care of myself at the end of those long mom days.
Whatever your reason for wanting to create a retreat, let’s figure out how to make our bedrooms a relaxing place that helps us be ready to take on being a mom again the next day.
Master Bedroom Ideas:
Idea 1: Keep it simple
If you’re doing a full room reno, you’ll no doubt be spending plenty of time at The Home Depot. Now with their new furniture and home decor line, you can get the paint, drop cloths, light fixtures, furniture, and even wall decor and decorative items all in one stop!
That’s a time saver that any hard working mom is going to love. It’s any home improvement fans total dream to be able to take care of everything in one place.
All the home decor line is online. You can have it shipped direct to you, or you can have free in-store pick up. AND guess what? If you want to have everything shipped, it ships free on most orders over $45. The goodness keeps on going because if it doesn’t work for the space or wasn’t quite what you thought it would be, you’ll take care of the return right at the store for free. Easy Peasy.
No matter what room you’re working on, they’ve got you covered with all the DIY tools and supplies you need along with all the home decor items you could ever need.
Idea 2: Start with your core pieces
Obviously, a bed is a core piece in a bedroom, so start with it.
I already have a tufted headboard like this one, so it’s the jumping off point for my room.
A dresser is another core item.
I’ve never bought myself a brand new dresser. That’s a bit sad. I bought one at a yard sale when I got out of college and did my first ever DIY project on that one.
Funnily enough, I sold that dresser to Young House Love when I started using my daughters’ old dresser.
I’d say I’m due for a new one that I pick out and love. I love that this dresser from The Home Depot has felt-lined drawers for the top 2 drawers.
The nightstands are another core piece in the room.
I like mine to go together but not be too matchy matchy, so I selected this pretty and simple white nightstand.
I love the shape and size of this unfinished table. It’s not a nightstand, but it seems perfect for what I want in my room…and I’ve never turned my nose up at another DIY project. ?
Idea 3: Add bedding next
Beyond the walls and the core pieces of furniture, the bedding has the most impact in the room.
I already have gray and white bedding like this, and I love it, so it’ll stay in my makeover.
Idea 4: Make a statement
Now that you have the core pieces and your bedding, you can think about your walls and wall color. What’ll go best with what you’ve selected?
In my room, it’d be fun to have one wall with some kind of painted graphic to add some interest and variety.
I love this stencil and think it would look pretty or even a giant gingham wall would be fun as well — something to make a statement and add some impact.
Idea 5: Add layers of color and coziness
If your goal is to create a retreat, once you have your core pieces and bedding, add layers of coziness.
For me, that always starts with a cute throw blanket…and it should have pom poms. ??
Throw pillows are a great way to add color, personality, and coziness like this Lattice Pattern Jacquard.
I wanted to add some pink to the room, so this is the perfect place for me to do that without it going overboard.
I couldn’t love the‘Hello Beautiful’ pillow more! It seems so perfect for me. A little crafty with a paintbrush (I love crafts that involve paint) and why not remind myself that I’m beautiful because I don’t always feel that way.
It’s a hard choice on throw pillows. I could buy all the throw blankets and cute throw pillows in the world.
I feel like adding this plush gray pillow with pom poms would be too much, but I mean, it’s so cute!
What would you do? Add it or stick with the 1st pink pillow and the Hey Beautiful pillow? Leave me a comment below and help me decide.
Idea 6: Light it up
Next up, add some lighting to your room.
I’m a fan of smaller lights in the bedroom that keep it a little darker because it helps us wind down at the end of the day to have dimmer light.
I love the base of this Clear Glass/Crystal Table Lamp. It’d look so pretty on the 2 nightstands I’ve selected.
Idea 7: Add some wall decor
Next, have some fun and add some wall decor to your room.
If you’re trying to make your space a retreat, add things that speak to you and that you love.
You’ll find plenty of selections of wall decor in the Home Depot decor section. You won’t have a problem picking something that speaks to you.
I love the fun and colors of these little acrylic bursts. They make me smile, which seems right for a place I’m using to get ready for another day of mom life.
A good reminder to chill and be in the moment with this “Breathe” decorative metal cutout wall sign seems like a good idea. ?
I had a hard time deciding between all the wall art I found.
I love this one as well. Again, might as well remind myself of what I can do while I’m chillin’ getting ready for another day as a hardworking mom.
But then there’s this wall art, and you know how I LOVE a good adventure. And how inspiring I’ve found all of our road trips.
Which wall art would you pick? Again, please leave me a comment below and help me decide.
Idea 8: Add the fun
Now you can add all the little fun stuff to your space.
You don’t have to, but if you find little decorative items like this Natural Geode Sculpture that you love, add them to the space.
They add personality, color and more layers of pretty to your room.
You can find it all through The Home Depot furniture and decor …. they even have pretty flowers for your space.
These are perfect in color and style for my room, and our cat won’t eat these like he would real flowers. Another win!
Idea 9: Don’t forget the bathroom
While you’re doing all this inspo and finding what you want and need in your room, don’t forget to add things that tie the bedroom and bathroom together.
It adds that finishing touch that pulls the two spaces together….and these pink towels from The Company Store would make me smile, how about you?
To create a space you love, start with an inspo board for the space you’re working. Once you have that, you can begin to look at how to make that dream come to life. You can use the Room Makeover Planner in the Big Organization printable bundle to keep it all organized. Then make sure to take a look at all The Home Depot has to offer and see how much easier it can make the makeover for you.
The amount of time that The Home Depot can now save us is one fantastic mom win. We can still get our DIY and makeover fixes, get all the finishing touches and even make the soccer match on Saturday or the lessons during the week. Mom win!
This is what home improvement looks like now!
Finally, don’t forget to help me out. Which pillows would you pick for my room? Which wall art?
I’d love your votes!
Thanks!
