Do you enjoy making homemade gifts? I sure do. I love finding the right thing for the right person. I also love saving money over what it would cost me to buy the same item. To me, personalized gifts are such a fun touch to both give and receive. Don’t you just love getting something with your name, initial or monogram on it? I’ve got a tutorial for you on making personalized beer glasses. Perfect for the beer lover in your life and perfect for the upcoming holiday gift giving season.

I love how these glasses turned out. You could also modify this idea to make everyday glasses or wine glasses. Whatever type of glasses you pick, your sure to make and give a gift everyone will enjoy.

So let me be ‘real’ before we get started with this post. These beer glasses took me forever to make. It was one of those projects that I thought was going to be simple and was not at all.

I love they way they turned out and I figured some things out along the way, so you get the benefit! I think with the tips I have for you, you can tackle this project and it won’t take 4 hours. Fingers crossed for you! No really, my tips should help you be able to make these into a do-able project and gift.

Supplies:

  • Glasses (Theseare very similar to the glasses I got at Target)
  • Contact paper
  • Stencil
  • Glass etching cream
  • Scissors or paper cutter
  • Tape
  • Paintbrush

Start by cutting your contact paper. I will give you the dimensions I used so you can get the idea, but you may have to change your dimensions in order to accommodate the size of your glasses.

Cut 1 piece of contact paper per glass. The cut piece should measure 11.5″ x 3″. You will need to cut a slit (but don’t cut all the way, leave part of your contact paper attached at the bottom) 7/8″ from the top. Cut this slit lengthwise down almost the full length of the contact paper. Cut a second slit in the contact paper 3/4″ below the first slit you cut.

This is what your contact paper should look like when you are done cutting. It is held together at the bottom as I didn’t cut fully through the paper. The middle area is the area that will be etched with the cream and will leave the etched ring around the top of your glass.

To make it the easiest to apply your ‘stencil,’ tape your contact paper together as shown in the picture. Do this before you attempt to place the stencil on the glass and before you remove the backing.

You will need to take your time when applying your stencil to the glass. It is super important to use the top rim of your glass as the place you align the top of the stencil. As the glass is a cylinder, this will require a bit of patience and a lot of lifting and applying and reapplying of the stencil, but if you use the glass rim as your guide it will be much easier.
Once you have the stencil in the proper place, remove the center piece (the area that you want to etch).

Make sure you press all of the air bubbles out of your stencil. You don’t want any space into which your etching creme will spread.

For the monogram, you can make your own stencil or you can buy a stencil. I have struggled for a while with getting the placement correct of the little center pieces on letters when I am etching. I finally realized that I could use my taping technique to help. As you can see, you can tape the center piece before you remove it from the backing. It will stay exactly where you want it to. Then you can apply it to the piece your are etching. Remove the tape before etching.

As far as the etching goes. I made these cute Father’s Day Candy Jars. There is a great tutorial with pictures for you on how to etch your glass in that post. Essentially, you just put a thick layer of the etching creme in the areas you want etched, wait at least 20-30 minutes, rinse the creme off and remove your stencils. Voila…done!

In the end, these glasses took me forever to make! The round shape of the glasses made it so challenging to get the stencil on the glass correctly. Once I finally came up with the method I showed you in this tutorial, things went much more smoothly.

I love the etched circle at the top of the glasses. It just adds a little more than the plain monogram, which I really like. To me, it makes them look less homemade and more store bought. If you are making these as homemade gifts, make sure you let the person you are giving the glasses to know that they are fully dishwasher safe. Love that!

Have you ever made a gift that you loved the end result but the path to get there was a lot harder then you thought it would be?

It looks really good, I appreciate your honesty, and totally get the frustration! I still might want to give it a try….Monograms feel always so special, and fancy (and I like fancy!) I hope you made some for yourself or at least your family, nothing says love like beer or a very difficult project!

Thanks, Morgane! The frustrating part was that I started these a couple of hours before the party at which I was giving them as a gift. Long story short, between traffic and how long these took to make, we were a couple of hours late! I haven’t made any for myself, but I want to eventually make myself some wine glasses. Someday, right?!
      Take care,
      KC

Thanks, Ruth! If you do try to make them, I highly recommend my techniques. They took forever until I figure a few tricks out! Thanks so much for hosting each week.

I did this with wine glasses for my bridesmaid and ended up having a wine glass shatter in my hand and slice my finger through an artery less than a week before my wedding… Cute but definitely not worth it

That does not sound good at all! I’m sorry you had a bad experience…and right before your wedding. That stinks.

What a cute idea!! Love personalized gifts more than anything else.
I was planning on doing the exact same thing for my husband with the exact same products! Your mug turned out great and I have an idea of adding some beer to go with it. I may have to check out the selection at World Market!
