Do you use your slow cooker recipes more during the summer? or winter? I know lots of people use the slow cooker more in the summer because it creates less heat in the kitchen. I tend to use mine more in the winter. Either which way, I’ve got a great tip for you today for using your slow cooker.

In case you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m all about simplifying things. Why do 2 steps when you can do 1? When it comes to using slow cooker recipes, I’ve never liked that many slow cooker recipes have you cook everything before you put it in the pot. Hello, it is going to cook everything for me, right?

Most of the time, I just throw things in and let it cook for me rather than pre-cooking like the recipe calls for. With ground beef it works fine, you just have to skim the fat off the top. I also use a low-fat ground beef in the slow cooker to reduce the problem.

The problem I had was with ground turkey in the crock pot. It disintegrates and changes the texture of the meal. You can’t even tell you put meat in.

I found a solution that works perfectly to cook ground turkey and save the whole pre-cooking time.

Start with the amount of ground turkey needed for your recipe. Make the turkey into meatballs. Don’t add anything to them, they are just the ground turkey.

Place all the other ingredients for your recipe into your slow cooker.

In this case, I was making tostadas, which I’m going to give you that recipe next week. Once the other ingredients are in the slow cooker, nestle the ground turkey meatballs into the ingredients. Cook for the time specified in the recipe.

In the last 30 minutes of cook time, pull your ground turkey meatballs out of the slow cooker.

Use two forks to shredded or break apart the meat balls.

Perfectly cooked ground turkey in the slow cooker! Love it! Place the turkey back in the slow cooker for the remaining cook time.

If you run out of time and need to serve things right away, it will be fine. It doesn’t have to go back into the slow cooker. It is only to warm the meat back up.

What slow cooker tricks have you got? I’d love to add more tricks to my repertoire.
