Our week of 4th of July Crafts continues today with a craft and decorating idea. I refilled my apothecary jars and used them as a decoration for the 4th of July.
Don’t they look quite patriotic? I love how they turned out and how bright, cheery and patriotic they appear. Now before I forget, let me tell you that I made these apothecary jars for much, much less than had I bought something similar. You can see the tutorial to make your own apothecary jars in my post: Apothecary Jars {Tutorial}.
For today, let me show you what I used to fill the jars for 4th of July. I’ve got some tips for you as well.
On Monday, I gave you the tutorial to make this inexpensive 4th of July craft of patriotic glitter stars. I also told you I would show you where I used my stars. Did you notice them in the apothecary jars?
After you have made your stars, you will need to attach them to your jar. You can use glue or tape to attach the ribbon to the star. I used tape. Make sure you cut your ribbon short enough that your stars will either just rest on the bottom of the jar or will hang just above the bottom of the jar. Start placing your stars, taping them to the inside of the jar lid. It won’t look pretty, but it doesn’t matter. No one will see it. I used a total of 7 stars.
Once you have all your stars attached, slowly and carefully place them in the jar. You will want to slowly screw your lid on your jar. You may need to jostle the stars a bit as you do this to get them in the correct position.
Next up in making our jars ready for the 4th of July, we need some pretty ribbon on the top of the jar. I found this cute red ribbon with the white stars. I found it in the regular ribbon section at Michael’s. It was on sale, which made it lots cheaper than the 4th of July Ribbon. The blue glitter ribbon is from their 4th of July Ribbon selection.
Use both ribbons, tied together, for a real stars and stripes look with your ribbons. Beautiful ribbon and glittery stars…our jars are almost ready.
I love having variety in my jars…not everyone does. Do what you like.
I filled another jar with red, white and blue candy. I thought they sold 4th of July M&M’s, but I couldn’t find any. I bought an enormous bag of regular M&M’s and sorted out all the red and blue candy…poor me, I have more M&M’s to eat now. 😉 I found a bag of white Sixlets at a local craft store while looking for those individual color bags of M&M’s (which I couldn’t find in white). The Sixlets work perfect to add white to our candy jar.
I used the same trick I used in the Valentine Apothecary jars to fill the jar with a lot less candy and a lot less money. You can take a look at a picture in that post if it helps you visualize it, but all you need to do is use a small cup, soup can, toilet paper roll or whatever will fit in the center of your jar. Then fill around it. You will never see the cup but it will save you precious extra space and dollars.
For the final jar, I found these cute patriotic flowers for $0.99. I thought they were perfect for a jar. I filled in the extra space with some red and white pom poms I had left over from the Valentine Apothecary jars.
I’m so happy with the way these 4th of July Apothecary jars turned out. Now, I feel patriotic and ready for summer and to celebrate 4th of July.
How do you decorate for 4th of July? I’ll have another decoration and 4th of July craft for you on Friday…can’t wait to show you that one, too!
Here are all the other apothecary jar posts I’ve done in the last year with the tutorial and other decorating ideas. Just click on a picture to be taken to that post.
They are beautiful but I like what’s in them, too!
Yes….I have enough M&M’s we should still have plenty when you come visit next. As long as you don’t mind suffering through eating the fall colored M&M’s.
Love you Dad!

Oh I really like these! I love how the stars are hanging – that is too cool!
Thanks, Ruth! The hanging stars are fun (and they have actually remained hanging and haven’t fallen down as I was a little concerned they might do)>
Take care,
