Sometimes, I swear I sound like a broken record, but I’m willing to bet you know what I mean. Have you thought about Valentine’s day yet? And what your kids are going to give/make for Valentine’s day? Even with all my planning for blog posts and an editorial calendar, these things still sneak up on me. I decided this year that it would be fun to make something with my girls. We usually just do the standard stuff you can get at the store, but I’ve really enjoyed finding small projects I can do with them(like the ornaments, crackers, or ice cream) and I knew we could figure something out for Valentine’s day. So, we learned how to make lip balm and I’ve got the tutorial for you as well as some really cute printable tags you can use for these or other Valentine’s day gifts.

I love homemade and all natural gift ideas. This is a great recipe to make homemade lip balm. Also has free printable tags for Valentines day. Great gift idea!

This was a super simple little activity. I totally thought it was going to be harder and take longer and so I kept putting it off. Do you know what I mean? I make things out to be harder than they are going to be in my head, and therefore, avoid doing them. It turns out how to make lip balm is actually really easy. Perfect after school activity to do with the kids.

Supplies:

I ordered everything, except the essential oils which I already had, from Amazon. It made it quick and easy for me to get the supplies. I was also able to get almost everything organic, which I really love! I’m going to list them below and they are all affiliate links.

  • Containers for Lip Balm
  • Shea Butter
  • Coconut Oil (I get mine at Trader Joe’s)
  • Beeswax Pellets
  • Hibiscus Flower Powder
  • Vitamin E Oil
  • Lavender Essential Oil
  • Pan
  • Heat safe mixing bowl
  • Spoon or Spatula
  • Teaspoon

I have a full recipe for you at the bottom of the post, but let me show you how to make lip balm in picture format.

Turn a pan and a heat proof mixing bowl into a double boiler. Place your beeswax, shea butter and coconut oil in the pan and allow them to melt. Use a spoon or spatula to mix the ingredients together.

Remove from the heat and add the Hibiscus Flower powder to the melted mixture. This is an optional step that adds color to the lip balm.

Add the Vitamin E oil, which will help preserve the lip balm, and the essential oils.

While the mixture is hot, use a teaspoon to fill each container with the lip balm. A teaspoon was pretty much the exact size needed to fill the containers I bought.

I didn’t realize they were so small when I ordered them, but it works out because the lip balm will actually last quite a while even in this size.

I bought the package of 50 of the containers for the lip balm. The recipe that I have at the bottom of this post filled 44 of those containers. You can easily modify the recipe to any size batch you need.

Allow the lip balm to cool completely before placing the lids on the containers.

Now, we just needed a cute way to gift our lip balm. These cute tags I have for you were just the thing!

They are designed to be the correct size for the lip balm, but can easily go with other things as well. Those cute scalloped tags are actually taped to the top lid of a lip balm container.

Valentine cuteness! We have plenty of lip balm so we will be able to give these to friends, teachers, and keep some for ourselves as well.

Now, I will say that this was not an inexpensive project. However, like most things that you make yourself, there is a ‘set up’ cost. Do you know what I mean? The first time I made my own deodorant, it cost me around $50, but now I have the supplies and it hasn’t cost me anything to make deodorant for a few years now. Making lip balm is now the same thing. I have all the supplies and a lot of them will last me quite a while and won’t cost me anything additional to make more. Not really helpful if you are on a tight budget now, but super helpful if you love knowing exactly what is in the things that go on your body and you love making homemade gifts/items.
