Half Marathon Training ~ Week 5

Well…another week has already passed. Is it just me or do they seem to be going way too fast?

I have another week of training completed. Things are going really well for me. Here is how it went this week:

This is the first week in which I have done everything and not needed or opted for a 2nd day of rest. That felt good. It felt good to get in yoga, physical therapy and strength training in addition to running.
As far as running, my IT band held up pretty well this week. I guess I should probably say it held up really well considering how I tried to push things and then accidentally pushed too hard.
You can see above, that I completed my 2 shorter runs of the week with modified speed training. I wanted to try to add something to work on my speed, but I also didn’t want to overtax my IT band. At the end of all three of my runs this week, I picked a specific spot on my run and ran from one point to another point as fast as I could. I purposefully did this at the end of each run to try to increase my endurance and train myself to be able to have a great finish. I also hope that even this small amount will help my speed overall. I plan to add more of this type of speed training, but I am going to take it slowly so I keep my body in the healthy zone.
Now, you may have noticed on my graphic above that I ran 10.4 on Saturday instead of my planned 9. Why on earth did I do that? It was a total accident. I am actually a little bummed about it because this was supposed to be my lighter week to give my body a little rest.
You may be asking, how do you accidentally run 1.4 extra miles…well you have to be really talented like me?! No, it was just poor planning on my part. I ran the first 5+ miles of my long run with a new running friend. I didn’t know what route she was choosing nor did I know exactly the mileage. Instead of staying up a bit later and turning my computer back on to map my 4 miles following the 5 mile run with her, I went to bed. I just decided to guess that the route I had in mind would be the right mileage. It wasn’t! It was kind of brutal because it had gotten a bit late and really hot by the end of my run. I even cut what I had planned a little short, thank goodness. I could tell I was overtaxed and needed more fluids and to get home. I was completely wiped out on Saturday.
What is really neat is that I now know I can run 10.5 miles. For whatever reason, running 10.5 miles makes me feel really comfortable with my ability to run the half marathon. I feel like it is doable. Great thing to have happen out the mistake in my training!

If you are just joining in on my training, you can view my half marathon training plan here or view other weekly updates here.

Thanks so much for checking up on how I am doing in my training. I hope you have a great week and happy running to you!

More to Enjoy! 😍

Wow! I have recently started running and I’d love to be able to run a half marathon someday. It looks like you are doing great (even better than you planned with your 10.4 miles!).
