My First 10k…Yay!

For those of you who follow my blog, you know from my post The Real Roller Coaster Ride of Motherhood, that I was competing in my first 10k this past weekend. It was a big weekend for me. My first 10k and the one year anniversary of my hip surgery!

I am happy to write this post with pictures and a synopsis of how the race went for me. I am more happy to say that despite my flared up IT band, the race went well for me!

I finished the 6.3 miles in 56:59, which is a 9:02 per mile pace. It is the pace that I was aiming for when I signed up for the race, so I am super happy. I really thought with having to walk, I would never be able to finish on the pace I really wanted. My IT band did flare up and I did have to walk for short times about 5 or 6 times in the race. I definitely felt the IT band by mile 5, but was able to finish no problem. I was in pain the day of the race and the following day, but am fine now and heading back out for my next run today!

I place 275th among women my age(the 40 to 44 group) and overall I placed 8,345th. There were 2203 women in my age group and 40,600 total racers. (Can you tell I like stats?!) When we asked the kids how they think I did among women my age, Snowflake said she thought I was 30th and Pumpkin said she thought I came in 10th place….so pretty much, my kids think I am a superwoman! LOVE THAT!

After almost 2 years of anticipation, training, injury, surgery, crutches, recovery, physical therapy, more training and more anticipation….I DID IT! It was so worth it and I can’t wait to do it again!

I am ecstatic that I finished the race and, for me, in such a great time! Now I know next time I can finish in an even better time! My only disappointment about the race, is that I didn’t see my family cheering me on at the finish line. They were there, as were so many other people. I thought they would be on one side of the street so I was looking for them there. They were on the other side of the street. They cheered me on, like I knew they would, but I never saw them…boo! Below you can see the sweet excited faces that greeted me shortly after the race.

Ignore my lovely sweat and rain wet hair….I did just run 6.3 miles in rain. The two don’t make for the best pictures of me on the planet…but don’t I look happy! I did it! It started to rain, just shortly before the race and apparently rained throughout the race, I was totally unaware of the rain during the race. Though like a dingbat, I did notice that my face seemed more wet or sweaty than normal…hmmm…

My girls had meet Miss Virginia at the ‘Health Expo’ (AKA the bib and t-shirt pick up with lots of companies selling things) the day before. Both girls were so excited as they had watched the Miss America pageant and watched her in the pageant. Snowflake had been disappointed she didn’t have her autograph book. I totally hadn’t thought to take a picture of her with the girls at the expo. So, Snowflake brought her autograph book to the race knowing that Miss Virginia was to pick the winner of a drawing. Mr. T had brought the camera. Yay! We got to see her again and get pictures. My girls were so excited! Miss Virginia was so nice and so personable with the girls! Very sweet!

The last thing to share with you is my new charm for my Brighton bracelet. I got my charm bracelet about 1.5 years ago (and a necklace, to switch back and forth with, for my 40th). I have wanted the running shoe charm ever since. I kept making myself wait until I had run a race. It took much longer than anticipated because shortly after getting the bracelet is when I got injured. 5 months later I had surgery, then it was months of crutches, PT, etc. So as soon as we were done at the race, we headed off to the boutique to get my charm. Yep, I went in my running clothes all rain/sweaty! I didn’t care one bit. I had earned my charm and didn’t want to wait one more minute! I have been proudly wearing it ever since!

Thanks for stopping by!

More to Enjoy! 😍

WOW! I bet it felt that much more amazing to cross that finish line after all you went through.  No wonder you’re your kiddos hero. 🙂

You are truly inspiring. Thanks for sharing your story.
